When Columbus discovered Jamaica in 1494, its mountains were heavily forested. After the island was captured by the English, the lower slopes were cleared for farming and the forests were harvested for timber. Today the upper slopes are still filled with forests and lush vegetation. The Blue Mountains boast the highest peak in the country. The foothills begin on the outskirts of Kingston and the mountains then soar with the highest peak reaching over 7,000 feet. If you are not a hiker, the best way to tour the mountains is by car. If you are a hiker you will be challenged by the winding roads and rugged terrain. Most of the natural forests of the Blue and John Crow mountains lie on government-owned "Crown Lands." The entire area has been recently declared a National Park under the jurisdiction of the Forestry Department. Take a trip. You will leave refreshed and invigorated.
