The Rose Bed Inn was built between 1908 and 1910 as a private residence for the family of William and Ella Schrader. William was a German immigrant who neither spoke nor wrote any English. Ella was English speaking and was therefore the one who conducted most of the family's business. In fact, the property was in her name only for a period, quite unusual for the era.
William was a prominent brick contractor, despite the language barrier. This home was built as not only the family residence, but also as a show place for his talent as a builder. The brick is a rare composite, referred to as "Iron Spot". Even though the home featured indoor plumbing at the time of construction, William disdained modernization; therefore the children carried water from the cistern and filled the bathroom fixtures using buckets.
