The roads in Cusco are much like the rest of Peru, especially the cities; they're narrow and traffic is heavy along most of them. These roads suit smaller, more compact and thinner models because they're easier to navigate and use up less fuel. If you're travelling in a larger group, large car hire in Cusco will do, but try to find a model that's thinner than most. You'll want to avoid anything flashy like a convertible when hiring a car in Cusco. If you can find a smaller four-wheel drive; that'll be the better option to deal with rough roads on the outskirts and between cities.

The speed limits in Cusco are the same as in the rest of Peru. When driving within city limits, the limit you'll stick to will be 50 km/h; while travelling on the open road, it’s limited to 90 km/h. If you're driving along major highways or motorways, the speed limit is capped at 100 km/h. Bear in mind, that locals tend to treat these limits as guidelines rather than the law, but you'll need to obey them, especially in the city, to avoid getting into trouble with the law.

There isn't much official parking space in Cusco unless you're close to a retail facility or centre, but these are generally unpaid parking spaces. It's important to try to find a hotel that offers free parking, to avoid leaving your car on the street in the evenings.
