Way much easier to rent at airport rental car area then traveling to find a rental car place like Zoom Rent a Car.

Don’t go through a third party. Book directly through the car rental company and double check they will even accept your form of payment. Even if the booking goes through online and payment is taken they may still decline your rental and refuse to issue a refund.

Small cars are nice to rent in Houston. If I had used a family vehicle for it to Dallas I would have been well over 400 dollars in gas. Using the little Hyundai I only spent 50 bucks in gas and returned it with a full tank. The only thing that caught me off guard was the $500 deposit required. Would have been nice to know that beforehand

Make sure you check out the vehicle for any defects before you leave the lot or you may have additional costs. We could have had to pay for an additional half tank of gas that we shouldn’t have had to pay for if we hadn’t checked the gas gauge before we left the lot.

Get there really early. Preregister. Houston traffic sucks, especially at rush hour, but it's not like DC or LA or NY traffic. Use your Navigator, you'll be fine. When returning the car, don't get gas on the road leading into the airport...it's literally $1 more per gallon than the gas on the other side of the street--heading out of the airport. Fill up before you get there, or spend an extra 10 minutes to U-turn to get gas on the other side of the road. We drive faster than folks in most big cities. Please stay out of the fast lanes if you're getting passed on the right. And if you're really slow, please stay off the freeway altogether. Slow drivers cause a lot more accidents than fast drivers. We have these nifty things called "access roads" that parallel the freeways. They may be disconcerting, at first, but they're great for slow drivers. Even though we drive faster, there are plenty of law enforcement agencies looking to make money on traffic offenses. Drive with the flow of traffic to minimize your risks of being the one that gets pulled over. Again, Navigator may be your friend.

It was my first time in Houston, and this experience wasn't the best. KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Houston
Travelers flying into Houston will want to consider renting a car while they are in town, as in Houston -- and in Texas in general -- it is much easier to get around in a car than to rely on public transportation. For instance, if you would like to catch a Texans game at NRG Stadium, it would take 50 minutes to take public transport via METRORail from downtown to the stadium, as opposed to 20 minutes by car.
Picking up a hire car after your flight to Houston? At George Bush Intercontinental Airport, travelers can reach the hire Car Center via shuttle bus from any of the three terminals and from the Baggage Claim Area. For travelers flying into Hobby Airport, shuttle buses to the hire Car Center depart from Curb Zone 1 with signs out to guide the way.
Houston’s morning rush hour lasts from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and in the evening it starts as early as 4 p.m. and runs till 7 p.m. During rush hour, many of the highways can become severely congested and are worth avoiding. In particular, US-59 and IH-10 in the Galleria area can become especially congested.
Travelers should be aware that many of the highway exit ramps will exit onto feeder roads that run parallel to the highway before exiting onto regular streets. The feeder roads are also a convenient place to pull a U-turn if you find that you have exited the highway too early.
One of the essential conditions for getting a hire car in Houston is having a valid driver's licence. If you are a visitor to the city, you can use your home licence as long as it is written in English. An International Driving Permit (IDP) would be required where your home country's driving licence is not in English. While certain car hire agencies may have restrictions for those below the age of 21, anyone under the age of 25 may have to pay a surcharge for the services provided to them.
Houston is a city with a couple of renowned destinations, which visitors can visit during their stay. To ensure that you get the most out of your stay in the city, you should opt for cheap car hire in Houston. It will save you from the hassle of boarding other means of public transport and enhance your comfort as you travel in and around the city. Additionally, a Houston hire car will drastically reduce your travel time when travelling through the different locations within the city. Among the locations you can visit in your Houston hire car is the Houston Zoo, located roughly 20 miles from the city centre. It will take you around 30min to complete the journey.
You may add extras to your hire car depending on the company you choose. Most Houston car hire companies provide typical add-ons, like a GPS to help you navigate uncharted territory. Additionally, consider equipping your Houston hire car with winter tyres if you plan to travel on icy or snowy roads during the winter. Also, a rack on the roof may be added to your vehicle if you need more luggage space. The last option is a toll pass, which enables you to utilise toll highways without stopping at each toll booth. Various hire firms can arrange these passes.

The staff at the airport were kind and helpful during both pick-up and drop-off, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience didn’t go as smoothly. I wasn’t given any paperwork at pick-up, which became a problem when I ran into an issue with the car. The trunk wouldn’t close, and I didn’t have a phone number to call for help. I ended up having to stop at a gas station and pay out of pocket for assistance, which delayed my plans since I couldn’t safely drive with the trunk open. I then called customer service and spent about an hour explaining the situation. I was told everything was documented and that I would receive a credit. However, when I followed up on later days, I was told there were no notes from that call and no credit had been applied. I had to call several times and kept getting different answers, which was frustrating. To add to that, I received an email saying I could return the car at either 12 PM or 3 PM without any extra charge, but I was still charged anyway. I called several times about extending the lease. Due to renting through a 3rd party , I encountered a lot of wasted time. I had one agent who stopped talking to me because she couldn't understand what I needed. She literally stopped talking and sat on the phone. I rented through Kayak which I won't do again. Overall, while the in-person staff were great, the lack of communication and follow-through made this a really frustrating experience. I 'm still trying to get it resolved before disputing with the bank.

When we went to pick up the car at the original booking location , they didn’t have any cars , after spending 2 hours on the phone we had to drive to the airport to pick up the car , wasting 3 hours and paying extra on airport taxes .
After my flight was delayed, I arrived at the Dollar location at about 6:04pm. The office was still open and two men behind the counter. I explained my situation and said I was there for my rental and that I was already checked in via pre check-in via email. I was abruptly told " sorry , we close at 6:00pm. You'll have to come back tomorrow ". I'm 75 and my wife is handicapped and 73, but they would not help us. Being an off airport location they left us on the street to fend for ourselves. Probably the worse customer service I've ever experienced. After picking up the car the next morning, I was told I should receive compensation for the shorter rental period from Kayak. We'll see if that's true. Needless to say, I'll never rent with Dollar again.

I booked my car through kayak and Expedia, during which I prepaid with my Chime card. When I reached the thrifty counter, I was told they do not accept Chime despite it being accepted during the reservation. I have since attempted to get a refund since I was unable to get a rental car and was nearly stuck in Houston, TX and was told there was nothing Expedia could do because they could not get ahold of thrifty to authorize it, I am now out nearly $350 ontop of the rental price of a different company. I will not be working with Thrifty again and I certainly will not be booking third party through Kayak or Expedia ever again.

Terrible. My flight was delayed and they were closed when I arrived. According to the website they closed at 10 PM. My flight arrived after 11 PM. I attempted to call the office at 11:37 PM and no one answered. The pre-recorded message advised that a shuttle would arrive every 20-30 minutes so I continued to wait. A shuttle never arrived so I had to take alternate transportation to my hotel. I called the next day to attempt to pick up the car and they said the reservation was canceled due to me not picking it up within a few hours (which was impossible because they were closed). To make matters worse, they charged me for the full price for the rental and I did not receive a car.

Everything went great until it came time to drop the car off in Leesville. The drop off location had one employee working. When I arrived, there were 7 people ahead of me already waiting. She did the best she could, and did it with a smile on her face, but it took nearly 45 minutes for her just to be able to get to me, for a drop off that took less than 10 seconds to do. To staff this place with 1 person, alone, is absolutely absurd and laughable.
Not good. Finding shuttle was a problem, rental Agent was not courteous, return directions and signs were not good, return manager refused to give printed receipt. Overall-very bad experience and will not rent again from them.

I was quoted a price upon reservation. When I arrived to pick up the car I was told the car did not have GPS which I assumed it would have and absolutely needed. The car with GPS cost me more than TWICE as much as the initial quoted price and it was not a category update. I have consistently rented with Sixt for years in Paris, France. You can look it up. GPS was never an issue. To say the least I am extremely disappointed at what I consider as misrepresentation, and will steer away from Sixt in the future.

The car that I rented was not available. The only vehicle available for the price that I was quoted was a 15 passenger van. I had to pay $80 extra to choose between a SUV or a mini-van. This happens a lot with Avis. It's very frustrating as a customer.
I have used them before and liked the experience of the rental via TV. That part was still excellent and the return was also excellent. BUT it took almost 30 minutes for a shuttle, then there were so many people that it took ten minutes to load the luggage on the shuttle and the shuttle was so crowded that some people had to stand up in the van. The van driver was very, very nice, but the vans aren't frequent enough. It was made worse by only two of the four televisit kiosks working. It took FOREVER. They need to add more van service during high volume times. And they need to make sure that all kiosks are working and probably add two kiosks. There was a line of five people when I arrived and a line of five people when I left to get my car. The fellow on the tele rental was excellent. He could see that I had rented from them before and it made the process easier.

After a delay in flight they refused to give me my rental without a fee, they however said they could waive the fee if I right then gave them a "positive" review. Obviously red flags go up because these guys are trying to bribe for a good review. They refused to let me talk with a manager with one clerk claiming he was the manager after two others kept saying that "she" was not available. I left and rented with someone else as they are not trustworthy and will run u around. I got a refund later but I believe this was Expedia's doing as the first request for refund was denied, then a day later it was granted. Do not use this company, they offer cheap rides for a reason.

The rental was $29 in your website but I ended up paying $70. The dissatisfaction comes from being falsely misled by your company.

I suppose it’s the future. So you aren’t actually seeing someone in person. The instructor comes on the screen and everything is done virtually. Not bad or good, just very different for those who’ve never experience it.
Worst attempted car rental ever. The company is completely corrupt. You find yourself in a booth, where only one person is allowed, talking to a screen, where agents apparently trained to rip you off confound you. Price for paying for possible tolls is outrageous. Lies about whether you can rent a car in Texas with a Texas driver's license and no regular car insurance (because we don't currently own a car) when third-party insurance covers that issue. Never ended up renting us the car. Said we had to get a refund from the source where we found York. I could go on... The matter is now in dispute...

This place is terrible. There was nobody at the location there were 2 other groups there waiting for a car they both said they were waiting for over an hour. I called the number and the person who answered wanted me to text her my personal information cause their system was down. We left and went to hertz

The address is wrong on Kayak. Cost me extra Uber to find the company. The car was not equivalent to a Honda CR 5. I have never heard of a car rental with no refunds. 30 minutes after making the reservation I realized it was at the wrong airport in Houston. I called Kayak and York with no refund policy and got no refund. Cost me extra Uber to get to the right airport. Kayak did not make the refund policy clear and did not make the differential between the two airports clear. The new car rental place of business is a mess, nothing more than an empty warehouse. After explaining my dilemma to the people at the place of business the people were unapologetic and rude. I will not rent with Kayak again, I am a stockholder of Expedia, I am sorry I tried your site.

First called several times the phone number to arrange the pickup when I was at the assigned location, no one answered. Then, after several attempts someone answered and said they just closed the shuttle at 6pm, without any notification and knowing I was arriving. Since they were not able to provide me the service, tried to cancel it and the AI bot just mentioned was not possible and then the live representative say they need to verify with the York location what I was reporting and to wait several days for just an answer, extremely poor Customer service, resolution and experience. Will never go ahead and trust a service with Kayak.

Wait time for pick up at the airport was extremely long. Tha rental place had only one man rin pick up and drop off. The rental place is being run from an hotel lobby which looks awkward to me. I had 2 flat tires which made it impossible to move, on calling the rental, they told me to call my insurance company because towing assistance wasn't part of the contract, so, incase you rent from York Car Rental any problem you encounter during the duration of your rental is entirely yours. The usual practice that the rental place will send you another vehicle as replacement is out of it at York. I had to spend additional $320 out of pocket to tow and replace the tires🙁🙁🙁. Even with this experience, I will give kudos to the Driver, who is an amazing guy 👍🤝.
Office outside of airport, close to early 7:00pm I arrived at 8:30pm I received last minute message, I went there they was closed, I have to take a Uber, inconvenience, time and money, I came back tomorrow morning to pick up a car, they said my reservation was canceled, if I wanted it, I have to pay 240.00 additional fees, I so upset walk a way, to find the difference company, don't rent a car from carnext.it bad company

They did not let us rent a car even though we had confirmation through kayak. They only rent to travelers who are flying into IAH. We are waiting for the refund. We were very disappointed and ended up having to go to another rental agency and delayed our trip.
You never actually speak to an in person customer service rep. It is done via video conference type call in a phone booth. They push their own insurance on you and unless you have the actual hard copy paperwork to prove your car insurance or credit card has coverage they won’t accept it. The first vehicle they gave us smelled of marijuana and the initial fix was to supply us with strawberry air fresheners to mask the smell. After some conversation a replacement was offered. This vehicle was so dusty that anytime we entered it a plume of dust would rise from wherever our feet touched. There were no floor mats and it was generally just not clean. Upon returning the vehicle, due to traffic I was approximately 30 minutes late and they are trying to charge an extra $80 fee. I was unable to reach a customer service rep as the return building was closed and the phone number provided only went to automated voice messages. As well, the shuttle from the airport took almost 1 hour to arrive and then another 45 minute drive to the rental building. Suffice to say this was the worst rental experience of my life and despite the cost looking cheaper it will end up costing you more in both money and time. Not worth it.

Terrible customer service. I tried to cancel and no reply to calls. When I had rep from booking site call them they also did not answer. All done within the cancelation window and they claimed cancelation was not allowed. BIG WARNING is that their pick up location can take up to a half hour for a shuttle to pick you up for to get to their location.

The car had damage, hood didn’t fully close , back of car had collision damage and back hatch didn’t always open . Tires were very worn as well and was a concern . I was also forced to buy additional insurance. I showed them the insurance I purchased through kayak and stated I had my own insurance policy as well, but the employee stated that I had to get an additional policy as neither was sufficient. . I also asked for another car and they wouldn’t give me another one .stating they had nothing to give me .
Car was good Finding the site was painful. It was in the middle of nowhere Check-in process was much too long When I called in they couldn’t answer a simple question Was charged for 2 days even though car was returned in 20 hours
Half is directed at Kayak, and half towards Advantage. Kayak did not send me to Advantage to continue the rental, but instead took me to Expedia, completely unexpectedly. Not sure if these two search engines are now connected? But then for Advantage, when I did receive an email confirmation, again it came wrapped in a poorly formatted email from Advantage. All the instructions were in an unformatted paragraph, and seemed also like spam. It wasn't until I took the rental car shuttle in IAH did I find out that Advantage wasn't located there. Rather than taking the shuttle all the way back and then to passenger parking, I canceled the reservation and booked directly with a competitor. In not of these complaints, I had specifically requested a rental company that was onsite and not off the airport property. As I discovered, ALL companies are off-site in IAH, but Advantage was off-off-site
The car smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and had tires that were nearly bald. We never picked up the car because of this. We attempted to contact the Economy via phone and email (their office was closed) to request a change of car or a refund, and never heard back from them. Dishonest agency peddling substandard and unsafe cars.
Some Houston car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Houston.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Houston car hire.
