To make the most of the city and get to see everything, we make it easy and convenient for you to find car hire in York. It’s not a very compact city if you take its suburbs into account, which is another good reason to opt for hiring your own car. Top attractions to visit include the magnificent York Minster cathedral and the city’s medieval walls. Hiring a car will also allow you to visit historic Clifford’s Tower for panoramic views of the city.
While York doesn’t have its own airport, York car hire is available at the closest airport that serves the city: Leeds–Bradford Airport, which is roughly 30 miles or a 50-minute drive away. There are plenty of car hire facilities available at the airport, provided by some of the UK’s leading car hire brands, including Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Enterprise. The airport has a dedicated on-site car hire centre to the east of the terminal, and you’ll find all the offices and kiosks there. You won’t need to take a shuttle to get there, as it’s just a short walk from the terminal.
Once you’ve sorted out your car hire in York, there are a few things to know about driving in the city and its surrounds. Certain districts in the centre of town have driving restrictions at particular times of day, which is the main thing to be aware of. This means you will have to use one of the six Park & Ride areas in the city. You can park here for free, and then take a bus into the city centre. That said, with the exception of these areas, York is one of the most accessible cities in the UK for drivers.
Like most other modern urban areas, York can get very congested during rush hours, with the busiest traffic patterns in Yorkshire. These are between 08:00 and 10:00, and again from 16:00 to 19:00. Traffic is normally gridlocked at these times, so we recommend visiting the centre outside of them. The most congested area is the Hopgrove roundabout connecting the A64 to the outer A1237 ring road. It doesn’t snow more than an average of a few days a year, so you won’t have to worry about poor weather conditions.
York has historically been one of the great railroad centres in England and at least four mainline railway companies provide services to York Railway Station from various cities including London. Sunnycars and Keddy by Europcar are two providers with offices near the terminal where you can get a cheap car hire in York while Firefly, Enterprise, and Budget maintain offices near the National Railway Museum of York. There are a couple of other providers located near the car park at York Station South, so you have various options to consider in terms of pick-up locations near the city centre.
If you’ve never hired a car in the UK, there are a few things to know about the process. Customers need to be 21 years or older to book a York car hire although some companies (Enterprise) set the minimum age requirement at 25 years. Along with a valid driver’s licence, you’ll also need proof of insurance and current address in addition to your DVLA code. Payment options are extremely flexible, with many major providers accepting bank debit cards bearing Visa and MasterCard logos as well as major credit cards.
All providers offer a range of options and policies, which can help make your road experiences more comfortable, convenient, and exciting. Sat navs allow worry-free navigation around the city while additional drivers and child seats are other popular add-ons if needs must. Frequent travellers to York should consider enrolling in a rewards program with one or two providers to take advantage of discounts, upgrades, and express check-in features and other benefits like bonus miles.

Great customer service, friendly people, quick and smooth rental process. Location is fairly convenient to York rail station. No pick up/ drop off service is offered, so if the weather is poor (or if you have mobility issues) one must get a cab or Uber from the rail station each way.

Rob, our agent was very kind and so helpful. He helped me, an American driver to be comfortable with the vehicle and the British rules of the road. We highly recommend him and this facility.
Some York car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in York.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your York car hire.
