Dating back to the early 1800s, references of the hotel can be found as early as 1804 when the landlord of the Beaufort Inn, as it was previously named, would hold the key to the gate of the Abbey and augment his income by admitting visitors and conducting tours.The area originally occupied by the Abbey was much larger than it is today. The precinct wall followed the lane that runs along the back of The Abbey Hotel and its remnants can still be seen to this day.In order to cater for the growing tourism trade within Tintern and the Wye-Valley as a whole, the hotel has been vigorously upgraded throughout History with keys dates including initial extensions dating back to 1910.
