For three days in 1863, the famous Battle of Gettysburg took place. Union and Confederate soldiers met in this area of Pennsylvania and battled fiercely leading to incredible carnage and destruction and Abraham Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address. Today, Gettysburg remains a popular tourist destination for those who want to look back at the Civil War and the toll it had on America. Gettysburg is a national park of over 5,700 acres of land. Guided tours are offered frequently or visitors can drive their own cars through the national park relying on narrated cassettes or CDs to tell the story of the Battle of Gettysburg.
While some may feel that Gettysburg offers little beyond historic museums, the truth is that Gettysburg offers so much more to see and do. Beyond the national park is a thriving city with excellent factory outlet shopping centers, a great variety of restaurants, stores selling handcrafted products, and many other family-friendly attractions. Gettysburg offers a number of inns, hotels, and bed and breakfasts, stunning scenery, and museums for all ages.
