Lowell has come along way since its Depression-era decline, years beyond its pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution. Visitors flock to the Lowell National Historic Park along the Merrimack River, formerly the textile mill district in the 19th century, to enjoy boating, hiking and visiting the museums. Between the Angkor Dance Troupe, the Merrimack Repertory Theater and the Tsongas Arena sports and concert venue, Lowell offers much in the way of entertainment. Annual events, including the Bay State Marathon in October and the Folk Festival in July, draw hundreds of thousands of visitors. If you don't plan your visit around one of those events, you'll still find tons to do whether it's shopping downtown, seeing live music at a club, or dining at one of the many popular restaurants.
