Founded by the French in 1716, the site of Natchez is the grand ceremonial village of the Natchez tribe who had occupied the site since the eighth century, and were eradicated when war erupted in 1729. Although occupied by Union troops during the Civil War, the area remained mostly undisturbed although the Rosalie Mansion was occupied by U.S. Grant in 1863.
