Escape to the island of Phuket

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, and so large it feels more like an extension of the mainland. In fact, the island is connected to the mainland by road bridge and is within proximity of a series of smaller islands, making it rather easy to reach and an extremely popular tourist destination. With an endless selection of beaches at your fingertips and notoriously busy nightlife, a stay in Phuket can be as relaxing or as intense as you choose.

Island hopping and culinary adventures around Phuket

Phuket boasts an extensive range of activities for tourists feeling productive or adventurous. As far as watersports go, snorkelling, canoeing, diving, yachting and jet-skiing opportunities are in abundance. For something a little more relaxing, lazing about in a deck chair on the beach followed by a swim in the warm waters can’t be beaten. Take a day or overnight tour to stunning Koh Phi Phi, Koh Mai Pai, or Phi Phi Leh, the location for the film ‘The Beach’. When you’ve had enough of the sun, enrol in a cooking school that will take you on a journey through the local markets and have you creating culinary delights in no time. There are a number of temples on Phuket worth visiting, such as Wat Phra Thong with its half buried gold Buddha and the local legends that surround it.

Patong, ping pong and cocktails

Phuket’s biggest town, Patong, is the bustling centre of nightlife on the island and is renowned for its go-go girls with their paddle-less ping pong entertainment. It’s not all seedy though, international DJs, stunning views from beach bars, and cabana-style clubs all add a little class and some amazing cocktails to the island’s impressive entertainment repertoire.

Make your way to Phuket

Phuket International Airport is the second largest hub in Thailand after Bangkok and has a very frequent flight schedule. The airport services flights from Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, as well as direct routes from Australia and Europe in the high season. The local bus network runs from the airport to Phuket Town where connecting buses to all the major beach areas are available. Alternatively, the economical minibus services will take visitors from the airport direct to beach areas and are a much faster option. Cheap buses run direct to Phuket Town from Bangkok and other large towns within Thailand. This still means a connecting bus or other form of local transport is required to reach your final destination. Given the size of Phuket and the limited nature of the public transport system, getting around efficiently means making use of the local taxis and tuk tuks.
