The Majapahit is a fabulous historic turn of 20th century hotel with amazing gardens and an impeccably maintained structure. It strongly resembles Raffles in Singapore but the price is much less. It put a smile on my face the minute I arrived: the hotel looks like a movie set from colonial tropical early 20th century Indonesia; the lobby and grounds are gorgeous. It is an incredible value. The exterior, lobby, gardens, pool and restaurant are all 5 star quality. The rooms are huge and would be 5 star quality except for an extremely noisy air conditioning unit (I requested that they move me to a quieter room because of an annoying bell like noise. The second room had a fainter sound but still had the sound of an old or poorly maintained air conditioner.) Also the room furnishings are somewhat dated (not in a nice historic way). Nevertheless, it is an amazing value and a wonderful unique historic experience.
