Fairbanks was started as another gold mining boom town by a fairly disreputable fellow named Barnette. But despite its less than austere beginnings, the city has grown up to become Alaska's second largest without totally losing its frontier trimmings. With plenty of things to occupy families like the Riverboat Discovery, the various gold mines, the Large Animal Research Station, and the Georgeson Botanical Garden, there is plenty to occupy the avid outdoors person as well with excellent opportunities for canoeing and slow river-float trips, mountain biking, and hiking. Whatever one decides to do, they will need a car during their visit as the various activities are pretty widespread and depending upon a taxi could get pretty expensive.
