Because Jackson is located in the Deep South, it is plagued with mosquitoes for most of the year with the exception of maybe three months, which means that visitors can be exposed to the West Nile Virus. This won’t be a problem as long as tourists take every precaution against getting bitten. If possible, stay inside once dusk approaches. But if that is not possible or desirable, then just be sure to use insect repellent and wear light colored clothing. Avon’s Skin So Soft not only helps the skin but is also a marvelous mosquito repellent that smells nice.

Like any major metropolis, Jackson has its share of areas within the city that visitors should stay away from. These include Ellis Avenue, Hanging Moss Road, Robinson Road, Hwy 80, and McDowell Road. These are not the worse areas, but tourists should be careful, especially during the evening. Other roads like Medgar Evers Blvd, Bailey Avenue, West Northside Drive, Fortification Street, and Terry Road should be avoided all together as these are streets where a lot of crime takes place. A general rule of thumb is that if the area looks run down and bad, it is probably best to avoid it. As you enjoy yourself visiting the various tourist areas, make sure not to pull out large sums of money, and lock the vehicle you’re traveling in as well as the hotel door at night.
