Leeuwarden, Friesland's capital, is considered to be lively and eclectic, thanks in part to the student population, who enjoy the city's variety of restaurants and nightlife. But part of its liveliness is based on the love of sport: two uniquely Dutch events - the Elfstedentocht and Fierljeppen - take place in the area. Leeuwarden boasts a world-renowned ceramics collection at the Keramiekmuseum, and keeps historical artifacts (including personal items from famous local Mata Hari) at the Fries Museum. If you're spending the night, you can stay in a royal palace, or let the local students pamper you at their hotel.
