On the grassy expanse leading up to the entrance of El Morro, you’ll find a few people flying kites in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors. Make your way to one of the snack stands and purchase a kite for about $3. The conditions here are so ideal for flying kites that all you have to do is grab the string, release the kite and watch it soar. You’ll feel like a kid again!  « hide

Let’s face it, the reason most people travel to San Juan is for the beaches, from which there are plenty to choose. Many hotels in San Juan are located right on or near Condado beach, providing the convenience of a variety of activities that can be booked through your hotel or when you get to the beach. A hop, skip and a jump away is Isla Verde Beach, another popular and convenient option. Nestled between Condado and Isla Verde is Ocean Park Beach, a quieter and more residential alternative (although the waters can get somewhat rough here). When locals head to the beach, they go just 30 miles east to beautiful Luquillo Beach, which provides all the activities of the local beaches, along with picnic tables, lockers and showers.  « hide

A not-to-be-missed experience when visiting San Juan is exploring the National Forest known as El Yunque. About 40 minutes to the east of San Juan, the forest peaks at 3,533 ft above sea level and contains an endless variety of native plant and animal (don’t worry, they’re small and harmless!) life. There are hiking trails for every level of hiker. Take a tour with a group for ease and comfort, explore the many well paved paths for yourself, or for the adventurer at heart, hire a guide to take you deep into the forest. Most recommended trail: La Mina Trail takes you 30 minutes into the forest and ends at a 35 foot waterfall.  « hide

At the western most point of Old San Juan lies the fort known as El Morro. Built in the 16th century and named for Spain’s King Phillip II, this fort protected San Juan from attacks by the likes of the British and the Dutch. You can explore the inside of the fort or simply enjoy the stunning views of San Juan Bay. Because it is connected by walls and tunnels to the other San Juan stronghold, Castillo San Cristóbal, you can visit both in one day for $5. Both sites have been named National Historic Sites by the National Park Service.  « hide

Opened in 2000, this museum houses a permanent collection of Puerto Rican art dating back to the 16th century. The exhibits here are built to promote Puerto Rican art and to educate the public about both past and present artists, including such artists as Francisco Oller and Jose Campeche. Spend a pleasant afternoon learning about Puerto Rican culture or touring the botanical garden. And if looking at all that art makes you hungry, a four star restaurant, Pikayo, is located on the third floor.  « hide

When in San Juan, do as the young, hip and beautiful do and go to Rumba to dance the night away. Mostly for the under 30 crowd, this club gets crowded with those wanting take in the salsa and Latin music and dance, dance, dance.  « hide

With three levels, this club can please everyone in a group. The main section of the club is the second level dance floor. When you need a refreshing drink, the first floor pub is your best bet. And that breath of fresh air can be had on the rooftop terrace with a view.  « hide
