Sundance is a small community located in Provo Canyon at the base of Mt. Timpanogos. A year round resort, the property was purchased in 1969 by Actor Robert Redford and named after his character in the classic film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. But the emphasis in this resort is not only on outdoor activities like skiing, mountain biking, and hiking, although visitors will find plenty of that. It is also focused on its art programs through the Sundance Institute, which Redford founded in 1980 to encourage and support independent American playwriting and filmmaking. Each year the Sundance Institute plays host to the Sundance Film Festival, the nation's premier annual film festival.
