Vieques Island is an unspoiled tropical paradise of less than 10,000 inhabitants. The Arawak Indians first inhabited the island. They were followed by the pirates during the 17th century. Various European powers fought for control. The Spaniards were the first to conquer the native inhabitants and turned them into slaves. In 1811, the island was taken over by Puerto Rico. During the 1940's, the United States Navy purchased a portion of the land to use as a testing ground. This testing continued for many years amidst much opposition from locals and others. In 2003, the Navy agreed to stop their testing and pulled their troops out of the country. Since that time, tourism has increased and, today, Vieques is fast becoming a popular tourist destination. Many are attracted to the beautiful, clean beaches, some which are yet to be discovered. Maybe you will be the one to discover them. Come experience the Vieques adventure!
