Located on the eastern border that North Dakota shares with Minnesota, Wahpeton (population 8,586) and its sister city Breckinridge, Minnesota, just to the east are growing communities. About 43 miles southeast of Fargo, ND, Wahpeton is surrounded by productive farms and has two railroads, five trucking lines, and a well-equipped medical center's St. Francis Hospital. There is an airport, and the North Dakota State College of Science is located here. Several national and regional companies including "Imation"who unfortunately has recently announced plans to close their Wahpeton facility in 2009 Woodcraft Industries, WCCO Belting, Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative, and Cargill all have operations here.
Visitors to Wahpeton will find attractions”especially those related to outdoor recreation's that are richer and more interesting than the small size of the community might indicate. In addition to fishing a major area past time is hunting which is popular because of Wahpeton's location inside the Western migratory bird flyway. Golfing is available at the Bois de Sioux Golf course, where the layout of the course has golfers playing across the state line into neighboring Minnesota and back again. A zoo, several parks, a pioneer historic site, and a museum serve to round out the area's attractions.
