A true cosmopolitan experience in Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States and has more than its fair share of museums and treasured national monuments and memorials. Names such as Washington Monument, the White House and the Lincoln Memorial are recognised throughout the world and have become synonymous with the wealth and power of the nation. In more recent times, visitors head to Washington D.C. for more than landmarks. These days the city offers a shopping, dining and nightlife experience to rival cosmopolitan cities internationally.

The world’s most iconic monuments and a nightlife to match

The National Mall is the impressive, must-see stretch of parkland that holds the Capitol, Washington Monument, the White House, Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian Museum, among other landmarks. The city itself is so much more than monuments and a visit isn’t complete without exploring the vibrant metropolis. Georgetown is particularly worthy of a wander, with its beautiful colonial buildings, lovely waterfront and infamous Exorcist steps. There are a few great spots to take in the view over the city. Favourites include the Kennedy Centre Rooftop Terrace, the Washington Monument, Newseum and W Hotel. Washington also boasts a number of large parks with plenty of hiking and biking trails. The National Arboretum, Meridian Hill Park, Rock Creek Park and the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens are among the best. A short day trip out to Roosevelt Island is recommended for those wanting to escape the crowds and check out the Teddy Roosevelt Memorial. As the evening sets in, try some inexpensive ethnic takeaway or book a table for high-end cuisine Downtown. Dining options in Washington are endless and cover all price ranges. After dinner check out the popular clubbing venues in the Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle and Logan Circle neighbourhoods.

Best areas to stay in Washington

You can’t go too wrong when booking your accommodation in Washington D.C. The decision on which neighbourhood to stay in often comes down to which sights are the most appealing. The Downtown area is perfect for access to Chinatown and the National Mall with its many major attractions. Georgetown and Upper Northwest are known as the wealthier parts of town but also have a reputation for nightlife and fine dining. Here you’ll find high-end hotels and shopping. Book a room in Dupont Circle or Shaw to be right in the middle of Washington’s trendiest streets, and have a range of clubbing options, restaurants and hotels at your fingertips.

Navigating your stay in the District

Visitors should have no trouble arriving in Washington D.C. with three airports to choose from. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is the closest to the city but accepts domestic flights only. Washington Dulles International Airport is further out but is serviced by all major American carriers as well as many international airlines with flights from Europe, Africa and Asia. The third option, Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is around 50km from Washington D.C. but offers a smoother airport experience. Metrobus lines connect all three airports to the city with a SuperShuttle also available from all but Ronald Reagan. Once in town, put on some comfortable shoes or hire a bike, as Washington D.C. is all about walking and cycling. Most of the major attractions are within walking distance of each other and the city is best explored in the same way locals get around. For longer distances there are a variety of public transport options including extremely efficient and affordable buses, trains and pedicabs.
