FAQs - booking India flights

  • Can I fly indirectly to India at a better rate?

You can find cheap flights to India that stop over for plane changes out of most UK airports. These indirect flights often offer better value for money, particularly those that make two stopovers. As a good example, you can book a combination flight from Heathrow (LHR) with Wizz Air, changing aircraft in Bucharest (OTP) and then again in Abu Dhabi (AUH), where you'll switch to GoFirst. You'll land at New Delhi Airport (DEL).

  • Are there airlines flying to India that produce less CO2?

KLM makes a very good choice if you're environmentally conscious and want to reduce your carbon footprint when flying to India. The airline saves more than 50% in carbon emissions on most of its flights. Lufthansa and British Airways come next in line, reducing carbon emissions by about 48% and 47%, respectively.

  • Are child seats mandatory in India?

India has no laws mandating that young children need to travel in child seats, but it's a very good idea to hire one as a bookable extra if you're going to be driving around one of the larger cities like New Delhi or Mumbai. India's traffic conditions can be hectic, so you can expect to have to make sudden stops quite often. It pays to make sure your children are safely restrained. You can book these at the airport car hire desks through KAYAK.

  • Are there direct flights to India?

It depends which city you are flying to, but Air India and Virgin Air operate direct flights to New Delhi from London Heathrow (LHR) and British Airways have non-stop flights to Mumbai.

  • Can I carry duty free alcohol into India?

As it is forbidden to consume alcohol in some states in India, visitors who want to enjoy their favourite alcoholic beverage at sundown will be glad to know that if you are a non-resident, it is possible to take up to two litres of duty-free alcohol into the country. You can purchase this at your airport of departure or carry it in hold luggage if it has been purchased before you check in for your flight.

  • Where should I fly to in India if I want to see the Taj Mahal?

If you are going to see the Taj Mahal, you will need to get to the city of Agra. From the UK, it is advisable to book a flight into New Delhi and then arrange to take public transport from New Delhi to Agra.

  • I am only going to visit Goa, what is the best airport to use?

Goa has an airport that operates international flights during peak tourist times. However, as the airport is set up to receive mainly domestic flights, it might be more practical to fly into Mumbai and catch one of the many connecting flights to Goa.

  • How long is the flight to India?

An average direct flight from the United Kingdom to India takes 12h 31m, covering a distance of 4628 miles. The most popular route is London - New Delhi with an average flight time of 8h 05m.

  • What is the cheapest flight to India?

The cheapest ticket to India from the United Kingdom found in the last 72 hours was £194 one-way, and £350 round-trip. The most popular route is London Heathrow to New Delhi Indira Gandhi Intl and the cheapest round-trip airline ticket found on this route in the last 72 hours was £380.

  • Which airlines fly to India?

American Airlines, British Airways & Air India fly the most frequently from the United Kingdom to India.

  • What are the most popular destinations in India?

Based on KAYAK flight searches, the most popular destination is New Delhi (22% of total searches to India). The next most popular destinations are Mumbai (18%) and Chennai (9%). Searches for flights to Bengaluru (Bangalore) (8%), to Kochi (Cochin) (8%) and to Hyderabad (8%) are also popular.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to India

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest India flight deals.
  • You'll find cheap flights to India that leave from most of the major cities in the UK, including those in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The majority of flights originate from any one of London's airports, so you can choose any of them, depending where you're coming from.
  • To help you find cheap flights to India, use the filters on the KAYAK live flight schedules. On this route there's a very cost-effective direct flight from London Heathrow (LHR) to Indira Gandhi New Delhi Airport (DEL) on Virgin Atlantic.
  • Instead of using public transport in Indian cities, it's a better idea to organise a hire car. This is equally true whether you're staying in an urban area or planning to go sightseeing in the countryside. It will give you all the independence you need.
  • India has several international airports that provide onward connections to other destinations. Mumbai is a good central hub that has flight connections to both the north and south of the country. You could consider flights into New Delhi if your visit is focused mainly on the northern part of India or Chennai if you want to explore the southern part of the country.
  • If you are looking at flights to India so you can visit some of the less touristic states in the northeast of the country, you could consider flying into Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata. From here, you can take domestic flights to airports such as Pakyong (PYG), Jorhat (JRH) or Dimapur (DMU), and make your way into the mountainous states of Sikkim, Assam and Nagaland.
  • For visitors wanting to spend time in Kerala, there are two main cities with airports – Kochi and Trivandrum. If you want to spend your time at the beach, then Trivandrum Airport (TRV) is the best airport to fly into and Cochin Airport (COK) in Kochi will give you access to other areas of interest. From the UK, it is advisable to first fly into Bengaluru or Chennai and then take a domestic flight to one of these two airports in Kerala.
  • Visas are required for all visitors to India and it is necessary to obtain the visa before you fly. It is possible to obtain an e-Visa, which is valid for 60 days and can only be used for purposes of tourism, business, medical visits or visiting family. In order to obtain this e-Visa, UK passport holders will need to have a passport that is valid for 6 months after entering India and has two blank pages in it.
  • As visitors cannot enter India carrying Indian Rupees, it is necessary to have organised your currency requirements before you travel. It is possible to take foreign currency cash into the country, which you can then change at a bureau de change (each international airport has currency desks) into the local currency.

Quick flight. But cabin crew were very noisy and talking too much, especially when we were seated at the back of the plane trying to sleep through the night .

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good

Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.

Very good. Glad we had Premium for the flight out.

We flew Upper Class from London to The Turks and Caicos. Check in was amazing. Our ldriver too us directly to a special entrance to terminal 3. It took 10 minutes to check in and clear customs. Amazing! The VA lounge is large and comfortable. Boarding the flight was easy and without a wait. The crew was excellent. But the seats were awful, strange and uncomfortable. Having a comfortable flat bed seat is the reason we pays 1000s extra. The VA 787 uses a reverse herringbone configuration. Look it up. You have your back to the window and are facing the aisle with no privacy. Turning the seat into a bed requires assistance from the crew so not very spontaneous. . The food was ok. A bit tasteless and meager portions. Had to pay for WiFi. I believe VA has other configuration on their dream airbus flights. Lots of stuff about all this on YouTube where you can see what I have been describing. I can not recommend taking VA on a long flight with these seats.

From the start everything was perfectly fine. First meal was fantastic. Breakfast needs a lot of work and food was overcooked and not very nice for breakfast. Staff were fantastic friendly nice they came round and check we need anything else to eat or drink

Food could have been better Entertainment was absent even in Business Class

I like it very much. Gulf Air is always the topper rank of the world. I love it very much.

The drinks should come before food. Unable to have any fluid unless after food. Thanks

Gulfair were on top form and everything went as planned

The entertainment on board was really poor. The map doesn’t give enough information and the movies have arabic subtitles, you can’t choose. The stuff wasn’t very friendly and the breakfast really poor. The food must not be spicy! They didn’t have enough drinks.

Aereo nuovissimo e con tanti servizi malgrado la durata del volo Spazio per le gambe ridottk

It was a great experience, can’t wait to do it again soon!!

Aircraft was new and comfertable .on time. Cabin crews, which I got english language pronounce was very difficult to understand .ovee all ok flight

The boarding at Heathrow is chaotic. That's partly due to the lack of space and seating at gate 8, and a Qatar flight from gate 9 at the same time. That's down to Heathrow rather than Gulf Air. I've had a similar experience here before. Another problem which isn't specific to Gulf Air or Heathrow is announcements, and those for boarding in particular. They are difficult to hear with all the other noise and for me with hearing problems it's even worse. A simple tv screen would help, so long as it's updated of course.

This itineray had to be cancelled as the connection time in Paris was only 55 min which is below the 90 min required by Paris airport. Nether Chat deal/Kayak, nor Gulf air nor American Air picked on that. I called American Air for unrelated question was then told that boarding would be denied due to the short connection time. This should have been an automatic notification from Chat deal/ Kayak or Gulf air and itinery cancelled. What is the point of inconveniencing the passenger?? The return has still not be refunded. Shame on Gulf Air, very poor customer service for an airline that has so good flight crew!

1st time with. Etihad Airways and it was amazing from check in to crew. Great flight.

It has been a couple of years since I flew with Etihad last, after having a unpleasant experience with them coming out of the pandemic. I can say that the experience has uplifted, but I can’t really rate the service. At Barcelona airport the service was great, with their dedicated Etihad staff very helpful. The onboard experience wasn’t great, not very personalised and it really makes sense why Etihad doesn’t feature in the top 10 2023 Skytrax awards. The crew just seemed to be inattentive and almost absent from the cabin. I felt that I had to keep getting their attention. Even after I’d finished my meal, an hour went by before I had to call them to clear the tray/plate etc.

Crew were very polite and quicker in service. Excellent cooling, comfortable seats and tasty food served

In my opinion, Etihad Airways is a first rate airline except for one important element. On the day before my return flights, when I chose my seats on the Etihad website I was charged an additional $55 (US) in order to sit on the aisle. I was not at all happy about this additional "hidden" charge and I felt cheated.

Eine Toilette der Business Class war gesperrt und somit nicht benutzbar.

1.Aircraft Comfort: The aircraft type was quite small with non-reclining, cramped seats that significantly lacked comfort. 2.In-flight Entertainment: There was no provision of in-flight entertainment screens or Wi-Fi for the majority of the flight. 3.Boarding Process at New Abu Dhabi Airport: Despite the move to a new airport, which promised enhanced experiences, the use of buses instead of jet bridges did not meet expectations, causing inconvenience. 4.Gate Change Communication: A last-minute gate change was poorly communicated, resulting in a long and difficult walk.

Very unfriendly team. It was very difficult to get a cup of coffee. Legroom was extremely small. Old, dilapidated plane.

Ripped off and broken seats in Business class. Seats stink and need to request the staff for additional bedsheets. Crew if very friendly though

Food was very good. Again tray could use a non-skid mat. I had a regular seat - comfortable - able to sleep undisturbed. Boarding was uneventful.

Boarding was quick and efficient. Ground staff were pleasant and courteous. Food was tasty, portions were good for me. Food containers kept slipping on the tray. Tray would look better with an anti-skid tray mat. I had the bulkhead seat which was very uncomfortable for couple of reasons. Aircraft is designed with no throughput to move across aisle to aisle. Passengers kept jumping over my legs to get from one side to the other to use the toilet. Secondly I had a mother and 9 month baby next to me. Mom had to hold baby for 12 hours in her lap as he did not fit into the bassinet. Half the baby was on my lap during the flight. Aircraft temperature was very cold - light attendant said it was the central cooling and nothing could be done about it. Movie selection was very poor old and outdated.

We paid to have overhead carry-on baggage. When we got to the gate we were told that our carry on bags would need to be checked and go below because the flight was full. Notably we were nowhere near the last people to board and about 30 other passengers also had to check their carry-on bags. Other than that the flight was fine.

Very bad plain although I paid A business class ticket I was stuck in a stiff fixed seat without any entertainment or Wi Fi for 5 hours I will never ever book a flight on British airline.

Self check in Kiosk did not recognize that I had prepaid for my luggage. This caused a 40 minute delay even though I had my British Airways email receipt for the prepaid luggage.

Crew were very friendly and helpful. They explained to us in detail the delay in our takeoff due to the storm that rolled in from Belfast and did their best to make up the time. Always great to fly BA!

Staff were very helpful. The free WiFi for messages was also very useful to keep in touch

Crew was more interested on looking at their phones than welcoming passengers during boarding.

The crew was very attentive and kept busy serving a variety of treats!

Terrible. Missed my flight to final destination because of delayed British Airways flight. Had to spend 12 hours in airport and $1500 for new plane tickets

The crew on board were all very pleasant and happy to help. The flight had the old business class seats. The departure board in the business lounge did not update and kept on saying ' gate open' but never said boarding. When I got nervous about the departure time and walked to the gate I was told off rudely for being late.

Offered vegetable curry when it was actually tofu which I don’t care for.

Mediocre staff, crappy food selections and no entertainment for a 14 hour flight. The only good thing was that it was a direct flight.

Not comfortable for sitting. Sits are too close to each other and it’s too hard for butt..you need to improve your entertainment section like tv programming, Movies, it’s so hard to kill 15 hrs in long flights .you don’t serve good food like other competitive airlines thats my opinion

It would have been perfect if there was onboard entertainment.

Food was unfit even for prisoners. larger front seats are terribly uncomfortable, which is ironic. Thorough need to upgrade aircraft on such a long route.

Interment is zero tv wasn’t work phone charger plug doesn’t work moves doesn’t work

Food could be better they need a better caterer in DC flight from India always has better food

Comfortable seats, on time departures and arrival, and helping staff

Everything! To start with, seats, food tray table, entertainment console all are broken! Imposing duty free baggage fees for $250 as a surprise penalty cannot be appreciated! Airlines should be responsible for transferring the checked baggages to the connecting flight. Having customer go through the transfer is painful considering the travel tiredness! No soft drinks served on flight is another crumble!

Old creaky plane, poor entertainment, USB port did not work. Food was ok.

On time boarding, proper information, friendly and cordial approach of staff, particularly crew members and the most important timely available of checked in baggage after arrival.
