Faro is a vibrant seaside city located in the south of Portugal. Capital of the famed Algarve region, Faro is both a historical centre and popular holiday destination for travellers of all ages. Faro has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot summers and cool to mild winters. During summer Faro receives virtually no rainfall and can easily reach temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius. Faro's main beach is called 'Praia de Faro' and has two unique areas for swimming and recreation. The beach area is made up of several kilometres of soft, golden sand in front of a wooden promenade. A range of watersports such as jet-skiing, sailing and wind surfing are available in the area. On the other side of the island is the beautiful Ria Formosa lagoon. Here visitors can swim, go bird watching or take a guided boat tour around the many beautiful coves and inlets.
The 'Cidade Velha' or Old City is the perfect place to walk around and take in the historical delights of Faro. The Sé Cathedral and Episcopal Seminary are architectural highlights with construction dating back to the 16th century. For eating out, holidaymakers are spoilt for choice with a wide range of restaurants serving fresh seafood, traditional Portuguese cuisine and locally produced wine. The Faro Marina is a popular area for dining and nightlife with a great selection bars, pubs and outdoor café's on offer.
