On the journey up the mountain there are several quaint parishes to visit such as the historic Jardim de Serra, meaning 'mountain parish'. Chestnut soup and limpets are among the local specialties, as well as the Camara de Lobos codfish known as 'gata'. Visitors can take a day trip to the nearby city of Funchal to surf, dive or swim with dolphins.
