Salzburg is a fairytale city with charming, picturesque streets and the dramatic landscape of the Austrian Alps all around it. The Baroque architecture has seen the city centre become a UNESCO World Heritage site, and anyone who visits Salzburg will fall in love with the unassuming splendour and majesty of this historically important destination.
It's difficult to pinpoint the best time of year for Salzburg holidays. July and August offer warm, summery weather, but during snowy December, the city is transformed into a winter wonderland complete with Christmas markets. Spring and autumn are less busy times of year, and since it's the off season, it may be easier to find flight deals for travel during these months as well. The main airport is Salzburg Airport W.A. Mozart, named after the city's most famous inhabitant. Salzburg holidays can be mainly spent on foot as the city is compact and a joy to walk around.
Mozart's birthplace and later residence are two places worth visiting during your Salzburg holidays. See where the classical musician and composer spent his formative years and adult life. A short funicular ride, on what is apparently the oldest operational railway in the world, will take you up to the dizzying hights of Hohensalzburg Castle, a magnificent fortress on top of the Festungsberg mountain.
When it comes to exploring what else the city has to offer, there are two options. You can stroll around the old town shops, exploring the designer and high street outlets in Salzburg's medieval heart, in quaint buildings with their original gilded shop signs. Or, if you're more of the adventurous type, bring your walking shoes and marvel at the city from above by climbing one of the city's many hills and mountains.
