Manchester is a city in the north of England and is the country's 'second city' after the capital London. It is a landlocked city but not far from coastal areas like Blackpool, and is surrounded by the Pennines and the Peak District which both offer breathtaking views and ideal hiking opportunities amongst the hills. Being one of the UK's biggest cities, Manchester holidays have a lot of culture and nightlife to experience, as well as the impressive city centre shopping arcade, The Arndale Centre.
This city is truly a year round city; with plenty of parks to sit, relax and enjoy the local nature in summer, and the winter offering an ideal chance to explore museums, galleries and even visit the large German Christmas markets in December. For the best weather though, choose June, July and August. Manchester Airport is a short train or taxi ride to the city centre, from there it is easy to navigate through the city on foot or with buses and trams. The timezone in Manchester is GMT.
Football fans should definitely try to catch a game at the Etihad stadium or Old Trafford, where two of England's biggest premier league teams—Manchester City and Manchester United—play weekly. Manchester holidays wouldn't be complete without a visit to The Football Museum to get a taste of the history behind 'the beautiful game' in England.
The Lowry Museum in neighbouring Salford is an award-winning gallery that houses original Lowry works as well as various exhibitions. There are several day trips that are well worth taking, such as a drive out to the Pennines or the towns around the Peak District such as Buxton, and the historic Roman city of Chester.
