KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Bath

  • When confirming cheap car hire in Bath, it's important to choose the right type of vehicle for your travel needs. If you're exploring the city and its immediate surroundings, a small or medium-sized one is a popular choice. If you plan on taking day trips to nearby destinations, such as the Cotswolds or Stonehenge, a larger car with more space is an appropriate choice. When driving on rural roads around Bath, it's important to consider a 4-wheel-drive car, especially during winter when road conditions can be challenging. These cars are also great for safely arriving in remote locations such as Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills, or Longleat.
  • Before you hit the road in your cheap car hire in Bath, it's essential to familiarise yourself with the local driving conditions and regulations. For instance, in the UK, cars drive on the left-hand side of the road. Bath's roads can be narrow and winding, especially in some of the more historic neighbourhoods, such as the famous Royal Crescent. When it comes to parking, Bath's city centre can be tricky due to restrictions, including limited on-street parking and a one-way system; however, there are plenty of popular and convenient parking lots, such as Avon Street Car Park.
  • When exploring Bath and its surrounding areas by car, it's crucial to plan your route in advance. This can help you save time and avoid getting lost. Be sure to book your Bath car hire and include a reliable GPS as an extra, if the car you pick doesn't have a built-in GPS system, which is typical of premium and luxury car hires. Use your GPS to plan your route and consider visiting some of the region's most popular attractions, such as the ancient Roman Baths, the majestic Bath Abbey, or the stunning Pulteney Bridge. Or take a scenic drive through the picturesque Cotswold countryside, stopping off at quaint villages like Castle Combe or Lacock.
  • Considered one of Britain’s most attractive cities, a car hire in Bath affords you the convenience of discovering its charms with the flexibility of exploring the greater Somerset region in ways where other modes of public transport fall short. American Museum and Gardens is about 2 miles from the city centre and filled with spectacular colonial era artefacts and fascinating Civil War antiquities. Take in the sights on the 58-mile drive down to Poole and tour the famous Poole Lighthouse, as well as the stunning natural harbour.
  • SIXT, Enterprise and Alamo are part of the list of companies at Bristol Airport where you can pick-up a Bath car hire after your flight arrives there. Upon exiting the Arrivals Hall, follow the directions to find the collection point for the special shuttle bus, which will transport you to the airport’s dedicated Car Hire Centre near the Silver Zone Car Park. The shuttle runs every 10min and is available round the clock daily. Once you collect your vehicle, it’s a drive of approx. 20 miles before you reach Bath.
  • Bath is one of the UK’s most visited cities due in large part to its collection of Roman baths and popular yearly festivals, so a huge amount of foot traffic should be anticipated along with a steady stream of vehicles, motorcycles and bikes. Roads prone to traffic congestion during rush hours include the A4 (Lower Bristol Road), which dissects the city east to west, as well as the A367 and A3039, which are primary arteries downtown. Secondary roads connected to these tributaries may also be vulnerable to tie-ups so add a bit of extra time if necessary.
  • Rush hour traffic in Bath can typically be expected in the morning from 07:00-09:00; during afternoon lunch from 13:00-15:00 and again during the evening hours between 18:00-20:00. If you need to be in the downtown area during these hours it’s better to use public transportation unless time is not a factor. If you have a sat nav you can always find alternative routes to skirt troublesome areas when entering and exiting the city limits.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Bath for £24 or less
  • Book your car hire in Bath at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

8.0 Very Good

Jun 2023

Had to wait about 1/2 hr as there was only 1 person assisting customers and the car was not ready but the guy was very lovely and apologized. He could have used some help as others were sitting in the office, maybe they could be cross trained

Vehicle was good, high price for one-way travel that was required after the national train strike that left us in a bind. No spare tires in the vehicle, so when we got a flat, we had to call for roadside assistance. They didn’t have anyone to come change the tire, so they had to dispatch a tow for the vehicle instead. We sat for 3 hours roadside in a foreign country and then they notified me I would be charged for the tow. We will not rent with europcar for international travel again.

Car hire insurance in Bath

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) & Theft Protection Waiver

Some Bath car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Bath.

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Bath car hire.
