The Covington Houseboat - Saint Paul - Building
1
9.7 Excellent (72 reviews)
Overview Reviews
Stay the night on the Mississippi River – literally – at the Covington Inn. This houseboat is trimmed stem to stern in mahogany, brass and bronze, extending to guests the elegant comfort once reserved aboard historic work vessels for company executives and VIPs. Windows and portals in the boat's tiered design draw light into each room. Sleeping quarters feature a mix of ingenious built-in cabinets with simple furnishings from the Covington's work era. Salvaged fixtures, nautical antiques and historic art provide tasteful reminders of the river and the inn's past life. Sitting permanently moored within the reflection of downtown St. Paul's towering skyline, The Capitol, museums, theater, fine dining and shopping wait just across the bridge. Offering a place for both a quiet getaway and the city spree, the Covington does it all. Beyond the privacy of the staterooms, the salon provides a comfortable gathering place. Lit with clerestory windows and furnished with fireside couches and window-front tables, the salon offers a great place for breakfasting, letter writing and browsing through the Covington library of historic river and shipping books. Our breakfasts, cooked in the boat's galley, pamper you with just a touch of the gourmet while fueling a full-day's exploration.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: It is unique, comfortable, quiet, cozy, and ina great location. Lizisawonderful hostess and goes out of her way to make you comfortable. Rooms are not spacious but this used to be a working tugboat and it adds to the harm.
Cons: It can be hard to find. You have to cross the Wabasha bridge, turn left on Water Street, snake around, following the signs for Harriet Islandand park in the last parking lot.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our stay very much. It was a great change from the same old hotel stays we usually make. It was a quiet and everything you would need seemed to be thought of. The location is easy to find and of course could not have been better. We will plan a return when we have more time.
Cons: You certainly don't need this space for the Covington on this trp. All Good.

7.0 Good
Cons: When o booked it was suppose to be an executive room with 2 queen beds. From the picture it was 2 separate rooms so I thought this would be great when the kids sleep to watch tv and stuff. Well when we got to the room it was a small 2 queen basic standard room. I was pretty disappointed. Called front desk. They said that type room doesn’t even exist. And they had already told booking.com this and obviously still hasn’t been changed on there website. The hotel was sold out so they couldn’t even move us to a better room. So I paid for executive room price and stayed in a standard. They couldn’t even give me money back... would have contacted bookings . Com but it was such a busy trip I could not be bothered. But won’t be booking through that website again

Cons: I was wondering what the next day was going to be in the back of my mind and it would be a big surprise if you can see that it was a little more money than I expected it would do for a picture that's been in a lot worse for a second and I would like it if

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The valet parking was definitely convenient for the winter time
7.0 Good
Pros: I liked how big our room was. I didn’t like the view from our window we were looking at the inside of the hotel. My partner didn’t like that there wasn’t a easy way to go outside and smoke because this is a non smoking hotel on the property. We looked for vending on the 5th floor the map in our room said there was one and we walked around for 15 minutes trying to find a ice machine and we couldn’t find one. I liked how secure the building was I never felt unsafe even for a minute. I didn’t like seeing they had parking then driving around when we got her to find a parking place. Valet was 28 for a over night and the secure heated garage across the street was only 13.we did utilize the pool it was very small not deep and there was no hot tub. I don’t see that a lot of children stay here so I think the pool could be bigger and a hot tub could be added. Other than that our stay was good perfect straight shot walk to and from the Xcel Wich was what I was hoping for. If there was a event we were going to in the future I would stay here again for sure.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were HUGE!!!
Cons: Upon check in, the front desk lady wrote the wrong room # on our keycards. Had to come back down after having another patron open the door to "our" room. Manager caught the mistake right away.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This was the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in, and I've been in quite a few hotels. It really felt luxurious, and the beds were so comfortable. Combine that with the low rates, and I will stay here every time I travel to St. Paul.
Cons: I do prefer to have a bathtub for hotel stays, and there was only a shower here. But that's just nitpicking, really.
7.0 Good
Pros: Location to where we would be each day was nice
Cons: Hotel bed was tough/hard, room creaked and popped throughout the night. You had to pay for valet for parking or park your own for $10 a night. breakfast was not free unless you became a World of Hyatt member...
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Probably my best hotel stay. We loved the building, loved our room, and literally every single person on the staff that we dealt with (from the front desk, to the bartender, to the kitchen staff at breakfast) were extremely friendly, down-to-earth, and seemed genuinely happy to be working there. We walked all over St. Paul, never once needing an uber, and hit great restaurants and breweries all day. We left with our expectations well exceeded and agreed that if we're ever back in the area we will be staying here again, without a doubt.
Cons: Not a single complaint
9.0 Excellent
Pros: I like the old style of the building. The close proximity of the place I needed to be that day.
Cons: Could be more area for vehicles in order to drop off baggage. A lot of driving around in order to come in the right way to the hotel.

Pros: The bed was comfy and the water was nice and hot in the shower. Balcony was also a great feature.
Cons: The exterior of the building was dumpy. Trash receptacles by the side doors were overflowing with garbage the entire duration of our stay. There was also vomit in the parking lot that somebody should have done something about.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very easy to get to, didnt have to worry about parking, easy to get to anywhere we needed. We will definitely stay here again!

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Pool and nice rooms
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Clean, modern and quiet
Cons: For being a 3 star hotel I expected a free but good continental breakfast. It was a 5 Star breakfast that cost an extra $30, which made the overall room price seem like less of a good price.

Pros: The courtyard was wonderful.....in beauty, greenery and even a gazebo. Loved having a sofa and coffee table in the room
Cons: Our room was at the end of the hall just past the pool on first floor by an exit. So noisy with doors slamming and kids running around. Couldn't find hotel info in room so we didn't know where ice was, if there was room service, etc.

Pros: Great experience. We stayed there to go see a St. Paul Saints game, and it was centrally located, a nice hotel, good staff, good facilities. I really enjoyed it. Nice of view as well.
6.0 Good
Cons: The rooms are usually way too warm with no way to cool down. Summer stays are probably ok, but I will avoid during heating season
5.0 Okay
Cons: The parking ramp was falling apart, there were jacks holding it up at the exit with concrete crumbling and rebar sticking out! Very scarey, will not stay there again because of that!

Pros: What a great place! The Bell Hop on staff was one of the nicest guys I have ever met! Thanks for the great stay!
Cons: Nothing!
4.0 Okay
Pros: The bar
Cons: The hotel needs attention with repairs and overall appearance. Not at a 4 star level. Room was worn down and so warm/hot and we were unable to change thermostat. Very uncomfortable as we were so hot we could not sleep.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Cleanliness, facility quality and staff helpfulness
Cons: Parking. I had to use valet parking because my vehicle was too high for the ramp.

4.0 Okay
Pros: Close to the Xcel Center.
Cons: Paid a little extra for the King Feature room with a river view. I hate to see what the standard room was since this room was barely big enough for the bed and nightstand. Also- the view was of the alley behind the hotel. Not the river.
10.0 Excellent

Cons: No issues.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great.
Cons: If anything. Paying for parking.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stay here often as it was close to Gillette hospital. We will stay again. We are very comfortable here. They do charge a $10.00 fee for parking. The breakfast is always good.
Cons: When I checked in the 2 girls at the counter were arguing about a mistake that one of the girls had made.
7.0 Good
Pros: The location was great! It was close to the Excel Energy Center where we were attending a MN Wild Game and there were tons of food + drink options nearby!
Cons: The paint on the walls of our hotel room bathroom were peeling and the property felt like it had been cosmetically updated to cover how old it really is. When we were finally able to use the hot tub (the first night it was full of kids until almost 10pm) it was luke warm. The breakfast was pretty mediocre, but it was included in the cost of the room so it didn't bother us too much - we went out in St. Paul for brunch instead. If you are booking, I would ask to get a room on the Capital side - we were on the highway side and it was pretty loud all night (which didn't bother us, but could if you are a light sleeper)
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Pillows & bed were very comfortable Breakfast was great. Morning waitress was excellent. Friendly, helpful & very cheerful.
Cons: Lack of counter space for storage in the bathroom. Room was very hot. We couldn't get the temperature lower

8.0 Excellent
Cons: The shuttle did not come back to pick us up at the Xcel center and no one answered the phone at the property .. for at least 40 minutes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We needed to get to the hospital before breakfast opened in the morning. Staff was great, she made us a breakfast takeout. Was wonderful because without that we would have gone without eating until around 3 in the afternoon.
8.0 Excellent
Cons: The door on our room sounded like a gun going off every time it was shut. Staff was notified upon checking out. The restaurant was very slow at service even though we sat within eye view.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff helping with breakfast the morning of the 18th...Hotel employee was the nicest lady. Very helpful and the most genuine person.
6.0 Good
Pros: Good location
Cons: Almost slipped in the shower because there was no floor mat. Deffianly could have really hurt myself. Also when I called for a new sheet they brought me the wrong size. So I cslled back and they got it right. But Then all of a sudden I have tons of sheets and blankets in the room. Then the chick didnt even look me in my eyes or say much and walked away quick. Seems weird. Not a big deal just the shower thing mostly

Pros: Good breakfast for kids, respectful night attendance (a general man).
Cons: plenty parking spaces

Pros: The staff, decor and cleanliness were outstanding. The breakfast served was much better with more variety than most other hotels.
Cons: The mattress was too hard for my liking.
