Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Prepare for a stunning example of Islamic architecture at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Grand indeed! This is the country’s largest mosque, which covers 30 acres and holds up to 40,000 worshippers.

Syrian architect, Yousef Abdelky, designed the house of worship, drawing influences from Persian, Mughal, and Indo-Islamic architecture (think Arabian Peninsula Taj Mahal). Construction began in 1994 before opening in 2007, costing $545 million USD and 100,000 tons of pure white marble to build.

Pools along the outside of the mosque display glimmering reflections of the white columns, domes, and archways. The interior features imported chandeliers from Germany made of Swarovski crystals. The main prayer hall is made of marble inlaid with mother of pearl and contains the world’s largest hand-woven rug, designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi.

Today, it operates as a religious, cultural, and educational center, as well as one of the most popular tourist destinations for holidays in Abu Dhabi.

The stunning landmark opened to the public in 2019, inviting guests to explore the majestic mosaic hallways of yellow, blue, and white. The great hall boasts one of the largest domes in the world.
