Top 10 hotels in Chamonix

Discover the best hotels in Chamonix hand-picked by local expert, Katia Kulawick-Assante.
Katia Kulawick - Assante
25 September 2024

Chamonix has been a pioneer in the art of hospitality since the 18th century. Its location at the foot of the Mont-Blanc mountain, on the borders of Switzerland and Italy, makes it an exceptional destination in every way. Known as the capital of mountaineering, the town saw the birth of this sport back in 1786. Observing these exploration enthusiasts on their way to or from 'The Roof of Europe' is one of my favourite parts of strolling through the city, both in winter and summer. The most impressive part? Its visitors come from all corners of the world to discover the wonders that surround it. For me, Chamonix is not just a destination but a starting point for new heights. The city is full of diverse accommodation options for all audiences, from family chalets to ultra-modern concepts, and of course, the legacy of its grand palaces of the past and the establishmments run by the same families for generations. Here is my ranking of the top 10 hotels in Chamonix.

1.

Auberge Du Bois Prin

Address:

69 Chemin de l'Hermine

Price:

£172-553/night

The Auberge du Bois Prin, a 4-star hotel, is one of the best in Chamonix. It is owned by chef Emmanuel Renaut, whose Megève base 'Flocons de Sel' has three Michelin stars. Located on the towering mountainside five minutes from the city center, the hotel offers a magnificent view of the Bossons glacier. Its proximity to the Brévent cable car allows quick access to the slopes in winter.

With its all-wood interior in muted tones, this traditional chalet features ten rooms decorated with headboards made of wool from the Alpine spinning mill Arpin, creating a cosy atmosphere. The wellness area, which boasts a sauna cabin with a view and a Nordic bath, is set in the garden next to the vegetable patch.

My favourite feature: Chef Quentin Veyrat-Durebex's table and his balanced high-flying menu, accompanied by an excellent selection of Savoyard wines curated by the sommelier.

2.

Le Hameau Albert 1er

Address:

38 Route Du Bouchet

Price:

£111-785/night

Founded in 1903, the Hameau Albert 1er is led by Perrine Maillet, the fifth generation to run this luxurious establishment. The hotel has just 37 rooms, suites, and chalets. All rooms have a charming allure and embrace the authenticity of the Alpine region. I particularly like Room 208 with its uninterrupted view of the Bossons glacier, its two independent chalets, and the exceptional 1615 ft² duplex family suite named Martine.

This 5-star hotel boasts a Michelin star in its gourmet restaurant, which adjoins the piano bar. At La Maison Carrier, the local cuisine eatery, I adore the house-cured charcuterie hanging above the fireplace and the traditional inn atmosphere. The place is perfect for a couple's retreat or a family getaway. And if you’re looking for relaxation, the Le Bachal spa is an absolute pleasure with its sublime indoor-outdoor pool overlooking the glacier, situated next to the hot tub and fireplace.

3.

Refuge du Montenvers

Address:

Le Montenvers

Price:

£171-1136/night

What a destination! You have to leave Chamonix and take the little red cogwheel train to get here. After a magical twenty-minute journey towards the peaks, the train arrives facing the Mer de Glace ('Sea of Ice') at an altitude of 6276 feet. About three hundred feet away stands the Refuge du Montenvers, one of the most stunning hotels in Chamonix, in a completely renovated 1880 building with an adjoining restaurant.

The best part of the day? The late afternoon, when the last visitors of the day leave and you and a few others get to stay behind at the hotel! A true adventure. For groups of friends, you can choose a 'tribe' room for seven or ten people, with cosy beds. For couples, I recommend the Altitude Suite, which features a bathtub facing the Mer de Glace. The hotel offers opportunities to explore the Vallée Blanche with a guide, visit the ice cave, or embark on even more thrilling ascents.

4.

Hôtel Mont-Blanc Chamonix

Address:

62 Allée du Majestic

Price:

£205-1837/night

Nestled in a building typical of the valley and dating back to 1849, the Mont-Blanc hotel is a top hotel in Chamonix. Designed by the interior architect Sybille de Margerie, this 5-star hotel has 40 rooms including 18 suites, plus two 7 ft² apartments. Located in the heart of the city, elegantly adorned with blue shutters, its large lounges and bar are extended by a garden in the summer and a beautiful shaded terrace with a lawn.

The outdoor pool is heated year-round, and the spa is outfitted by Clarins. At the Matafan restaurant, Chef Mickey Bourdillat honors simple and tasty cuisine with a seasonal menu. It is a renowned eatery that attracts both business diners and those seeking a more intimate experience. The Mont-Blanc hotel is a house of excellence, from the reception to the concierge services, offering shuttles to the ski slopes and transfers in a chauffeur-driven Porsche.

5.

La Folie Douce Hotels Chamonix

Address:

823, Allée Recteur Payot

Price:

£86-1409/night

If you're looking for ultra-comfortable lodgings in Chamonix, La Folie Douce is your best bet. With a total of 250 rooms and suites, this hotel is suitable for trips with friends, family, or business stays. Its friendly and efficient service makes it all the sweeter.

There is always something happening at La Folie Douce: a DJ at the nightclub, a game room (offering pinball and billiards, among other activities), a large bar with entertainment, lounges to work or relax in, restaurants... It is a place for sharing and partying, even if you are not staying at the hotel. After skiing, meet on the large outdoor terrace in front of this historic building, a former palace opened in 1901 – and once the city's Club Med. The outdoor pool is heated and has a view of Mont-Blanc. In winter, you can ski right from the hotel.

6.

Cosmiques Hotel - Centre Chamonix

Address:

37 impasse des Rhododendrons

Price:

£89-234/night

The Cosmiques Hotel is one of the best hotels in Chamonix: Its location right in the city center makes it a popular address for young people and remote workers among residents and visitors alike. Founded by a team of locals, this former bar is a cult address in Chamonix.

Its 17 rooms are small but very cosy, decorated in vibrant colours. A favourite of mine is room 34, for four people, with one bed on ground level and one on the mezzanine floor. For me, it's the perfect base when travelling alone or with friends. The hotel's coffee shop transforms into a cocktail bar in the evening, extending to a large quiet terrace, all just steps away from the main pedestrian thoroughfare, Dr. Paccard Street.

I always take the opportunity to bring back '4810' chocolates (the Mont-Blanc-shaped ones) from the chocolatier Maison Fattier, just a stone's throw away.

7.

Pointe Isabelle

Address:

165, Avenue Michel Croz

Price:

£105-449/night

Located in the heart of Chamonix, near the SNCF train station, Pointe Isabelle is one of the most well-appointed hotels in Chamonix. Its original decoration tells the story of the British Isabella Straton, a pioneer of mountaineering, who made the first winter ascent of Mont-Blanc in 1876 –I love the souvenir shop that pays tribute to her. With its 72 rooms overlooking Brévent or Mont-Blanc, the 3-star hotel is a friendly, practical spot, just like its all-day bar-bistro.

The fourth floor rooms are equipped with air conditioning. Also on this floor is the sauna, with a panoramic view of the city and Brévent. I love the 310 ft² Summit Suite for two, with a private sauna and a balcony overlooking Mont-Blanc. This area is full of great places to eat and explore. I especially love the Thai cuisine at Mumma, just across from the hotel, and its outdoor snack bar on sunny days.

8.

Plan B Hotel - Living Chamonix

Address:

196 Avenue De Courmayeur

Price:

£45-985/night

Located next to the bus station and the Aiguille du Midi cable car, Plan B is a unifying hub and one of the best hotels in Chamonix. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, hosting a mix of travellers and locals. Guests can avail themselves of a restaurant, a large bar, and small lounges for relaxation or work. Surprise: there are even two bowling lanes!

My son loves playing arcade games and foosball here, and the upcycled swings made from skateboard decks in the lobby. On the other floors, shared dormitories, suite rooms, and two- and three-room apartments cater to all types of travel arrangements. The 'tribe' rooms accommodate up to ten people, with space-saving bunk beds. The five-person family room has two bedrooms and a children's area. Ask for a room with a view of the Bossons glacier.

9.

Chalet-Hotel Hermitage

Address:

63 Chemin du Ce

Price:

£224-508/night

The Paccard family has been running this establishment for several generations. This luxurious and cosy address just steps from the city center is one of the top hotels in Chamonix. With only 17 rooms, the atmosphere is family-oriented, and loyal guests return every year. The rooms are romantic and charming. The large ground floor lounge offers a living space designed like a family home, with books, black and white photos, and memories.

You'll find a very nice boutique selling soaps, candles, and homemade herbal teas next to a cosy bar. In the summer, the hotel's natural pool is surrounded by a dreamy garden with three saunas and a relaxation hut with straw beds hidden in small wooden farmhouses known as 'mazots'. I love Arcüs Coffee, a five-minute walk from the hotel, for its weekend brunch or to enjoy a bubble tea with my son before going to the Saturday monring market at Mont-Blanc Square.

10.

Grand Hôtel des Alpes

Address:

75 Rue du Docteur Paccard

Price:

£359-1390/night

Located on a central pedestrian street, Dr. Paccard Street, you can explore the city and the peaks easily from the Grand Hôtel des Alpes. With its 32 rooms, including five suites, it is one of the best hotels in Chamonix. My favourite is the suite in the turret, room 700: a chalet-style bedroom on the mezzanine under the roof, with a whirlpool bathtub.

Incredibly charming; perfect for a romantic getaway. For dinner, I enjoy visiting Cap Horn and its club, just a four-minute walk away. I like the hotel terrace overlooking the garden, where you can have breakfast on sunny days, as well as the marble bathrooms that give the place a palace-like feel. The hotel also has a lovely view of the Bossons glacier. The wellness area consists of a pool, a steam room, a spa, and a salt wall.
