Rent a crossover or smaller if you plan on driving in the city at all. Avis didn't have the small SUV we rented and gave us a large Traverse instead and it was too large to even fit in the driveway of our B&B.

Depends on your travel plans but I would suggest nothing large. Parking is tight in Boston.

To get to the Rental Car Center from the BOS Airport, locate rental cars, take the blue Massport shuttle bus and it will announce Rental Car Center because a lot of us on the bus were not entirely sure where to go to rent our cars. Beware when renting from Thrifty from the Boston Airport.

If you aren’t familiar with Boston, have your GPS ready. It can be confusing. Also, there are a lot of one way streets, so watch the signs. You always have to be aware of which lane to be in. You might actually have to switch lanes frequently just to drive straight ahead, as lanes that were drive straight lanes turn into turn lanes.

I rented a car to drive home to ME so it’s a non issue but Boston is an extremely difficult city to drive in if you’ve never been here before. There is minimal signage and people from Massachusetts drive very differently. When they want to merge they just do. You must be on the defense at all times. There is always traffic too. You do not need a car if staying in the city proper in fact I’d recommend against it. Between the T and Uber and really just walking, you can get everywhere you need to, plus there really isn’t any parking except expensive garages if you’re lucky enough to find one. And if you’re renting from the airport to go elsewhere you’re fine with GPS. But with GPS trying to find something downtown? Good luck. You’ll be stuck in traffic for days and never find what you’re looking for. If you’re renting a car to drive to the cape especially in busy season I hope your flight is very early or late because you will be stuck in traffic for hours as well
Verified travelerMay 2023
Parking was the worst. You might as well Uber or bike everywhere. Driving was interesting as I'm used to lanes and there aren't many lanes here; the roads kind of just throw you in there and see who wins lol. The drivers are pretty nice though and easy to flow with. The roads were very clean and in good condition.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Driving is very challenging in Boston. Many roads that are underground and then have to double back to get on the proper highway. Actually, my Google maps did a reasonable job considering all the underground transportation.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Be patient! And careful on the dropoff not to take the keys with you when you drop the car, there is a $250 charge for doing that.
KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Boston
For exploring the numerous sights contained in this historic city, as well as the expanse of the US eastern seaboard, a car hire in Boston is your best bet for total flexibility, convenience and coverage. A walk along the Freedom Trail introduces you to some of the sites and memorials connected to its colonial past. At Faneuil Hall and its adjacent Marketplace, you can explore further before indulging in some retail therapy all before lunchtime. Concord, Massachusetts, lies some 25 miles along the I-90E and is home to some revered Revolutionary War battlefields and monuments, which are worth exploring.
When making your flight plans, you will discover that Boston’s Logan Airport (BOS) has a Car Hire Centre featuring a host of national and international companies, such as National, Dollar and Thrifty. A free shuttle bus transports you to the multi-storey garage where you can pick-up your vehicle. These blue and white buses depart from each terminal every 5min or so, and if you have difficulty finding them, seek out the nearest Information Desk or find a courtesy phone and ask for assistance.
Once you get the hang of opposite-side driving and the massive multi-lane Boston highways, driving your Boston car hire should be a pleasurable experience. Having a sat nav as an extra is ideal to avoid losing your way and helps with navigating the inevitable traffic congestion you are sure to encounter at some point on the road. Jaywalking pedestrians, along with bicycles and motorbikes, weaving through vehicle lanes are common here, so always drive with caution and double check your mirrors to avoid accidents.
The city of Boston is known for its rush hour traffic, especially along the corridors of the I-90 and I-93 interstate highways and the Route 1 and 28 intrastate highways. The morning rush here can last anywhere from 6:00-9:00 in certain areas and the evening surge is heaviest during the corresponding evening hours (18:00-21:00). Sports, entertainment and special events can complicate matters further and snowstorms are common, so reserve some snow shoes for your Boston car hire when visiting in the winter.
Boston is a bustling city with a lot to see and do, and while public transport is readily available, it can be time-consuming and limit your flexibility. With a cheap car hire in Boston, you have the freedom to explore the city and its surroundings at your own pace. Plus, hiring a car is often cheaper than relying on public transport, especially if you're travelling with a group.
One of the best things about hiring a car in Boston is the opportunity to take a scenic road trip out of the city without being tied to public transport schedules or dealing with inevitable delays. Taxis are also notoriously expensive, so you'll save some money by choosing cheap car hire in Boston. Drive north to Salem and explore the town's history and spooky attractions, or head south to Plymouth to learn about the pilgrims and visit the famous Plymouth Rock. The Cape Cod National Seashore is also within reach and is a must-visit for beach lovers.
Driving in Boston can be a challenge for even the most experienced drivers. The city's narrow and winding streets, as well as its infamous rotary intersections, can be difficult to navigate. It's important to drive with caution and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Additionally, parking in the city can be difficult, so it's worth planning and considering your parking options before you arrive.

Overall I thought it was a good experience. Was 39 mins late with drop off due to traffic and was charged an extra day. Was told about “all the tolls” and encouraged to purchase the toll package and did not go over a single toll bridge. Had explained my travel to the representative and she was insistent on my purchasing the package. Package cost me $60 and no toll bridge crossed. Budget refused to honor my rental of a small SUV, saying it was simply an economy class car and that it was kayaks fault for indicating the type of cars listed were small suvs. They told me they were “upgrading” me to a Toyota Corolla but it absolutely was a down grade and the car was as basic and underwhelming as they come. I asked to see the manager. I showed my small SUV reservation. He too said it was an economy class reservation and refused to answer whether they had my reserved type of suv in the lot. Also refused to give a different suv. He then with a straight face offered me a minivan. They were disparaging. They tried to upsell prepaid tolls and demanded to know who my insurance provider is when I declined additional coverage. It was the worst rental car experience I’ve had.

One of the worst places to pick up a car. Expect very few staff and hour long wait time.
They did not have the vehicle class I reserved at the time of pickup. They charged me for the e-toll premium service and did not offer the standard toll option even when I asked about the high price. And finally, the vehicle was provided with less fuel AND returned with a full tank, but despite that the receipt reflected that the vehicle was returned short on gas and I had to pay a fuel fee. I was able to get them to agree to refund me the fuel fee, but only after calling them and providing photos, which I had thankfully taken. This was the worst rental experience I have ever had.

Double charged (not pending holds--actual charges) and still waiting for a response from the company. Many pre-trip messages insisting that I should check in online to "skip the desk and go straight to the car." Fortunately I didn't do that, because upon arrival, numerous unhappy travelers were turned away at the garage and sent back to the desk to check in. There were physical signs everywhere asking people to check in online and go straight to the garage. Terrible treatment at the desk. The person lied and said, verbatim, "We only have electric cars right now." and asked if I needed instructions on how to find charging stations. I insisted on a gas car and suddenly he was able to make one available--for twice the price we had reserved online! Don't lie to me and say there are not any gas cars then. Bad service in general too. He asked me how to spell my name WHILE actively holding my photo ID, and then later asked "What kind of card is that" after I had paid. (He meant Visa vs. Mastercard, which, again, you have my card. Stop wasting my time.) Car center console was dirty with brown sticky residue. Horrible experience start to finish, and I'm still not even finished since I'm still waiting for the charges to be corrected.
The express pick up process was confusing and could have been much more smooth. I’ve done the express pick up on an app before and it was easy and clear. But with Dollar at Logan, the app didn’t provide clear instructions on where to go so I ended up standing in a short line. Overall it was a fairly quick but I paid the extra money to skip the counter, which was definitely not worth the extra cost.

We didn’t pick up our car, because my husband ended up with sepsis and was in the hospital. The reason I gave.Dollar only a mediocre radio is because I called the pick up site to tell them we would not be able to pick up our car, and they would not cancel our reservation, because it was made through you. That was frustrating, because we knew someone else might need that car, so I think you need to change your policy so that when people have a problem they can cancel we tried to cancel through you and found it almost impossible. Even our son who is a computer expert, had a difficult time finding how to communicate with you about canceling our car so not a good experience.

Supplier choice
Awful. My father had a heart attack and I wasted hours trying to change the reservation. I finally gave up and rented a car for the adjusted dates from Budget. I also requested a refund or credit and no one bothered responding. I’ll never use Dollar again.
My experience was outstanding! Excellent car, spotless and fun to drive. I left my phone in the car and went back to retrieve it. The customer service rep took my information and went looking for the car. Ten minutes later she came back with it in her hands. What a great relief 😅

1584 travellers who hired a car in Boston gave the car agency they used an average rating of 5.5
Some Boston car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Boston.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Boston car hire.
