Cons: Check in at the counter was a hassle. Tried to use debit card which was not accepted. Maybe it was mentioned in the fine print, I don't know, but I still don't understand why that's not an acceptable form of payment considering all the information they require of you. The agent did not outline other acceptable forms of payment until asked. Fortunately my wife had her credit card handy.

Great value but be prepared to wait
Cons: We have rented several times from dollar. Cars are good and mostly clean, however, pickup is a nightmare. Different cities same issue, not enough staff to deal with the amount of people. This last time, we spent 2 hours in line. Unacceptable.

Pros: Very good experience on a one week one way rental. Definitely take the prepaid easy pass for toll roads- otherwise you will end up paying more and stopping every time at all these toll booths, if you have to drive quite a bit.

Pros: I loved how friendly the staff were, and at the counter, there was no pressure to buy any extra insurance when I said it was covered by my AAA Visa card.
Pick up and drop off was easy and efficient.
Cons: I did not like the fact that the employee who gave me the car tried to trick me into buying 'Loss of use' insurance - saying that she had never heard of a credit card company covering this (not true). Loss of use is when the car company loses income due to the car being in the repair shop. For this to be true - the car company needs to prove the ENTIRE fleet is utilized (almost impossible).
Just another trick to try and get the consumer to pay more.

Awful start to a perfectly fine rental
Pros: The car I eventually got was a great and peppy little car that was perfect for what I needed.
Drop off went smoothly. The agent working then was professional and helpful, and I just wished he'd been working the previous day.
Cons: Picking up my rental car took forever. It took a long time for the agent to arrive at the desk. The printer didn't work so he hand wrote the information, but he expected me to sign all over the form without even putting my name at the top. Then I had to wait 30 minutes for cars to be brought from another location because they only had one huge SUV available.
The only issue with the car I eventually got was that it smelled heavily of cigarettes when I got in despite all the no-smoking stickers posted all over it.
Pros: After arguing with them they removed the charge for the extra day.
Cons: Very rude people. The location of the cars is in a parking structure that will take you anywhere from 5-15 mins to enter or leave. But this is not taken into consideration for the timing of the vehicle. So if you are 15 mins late (even though our actual rental started 30 mins late due to wait for car and the parking structure) which we were they will try to charge you for an extra day! And when you dispute it they get all high and mighty and rude. Not to mention we requested a toll tag while renting, which they never gave us. So we spent the entire trip trying to avoid toll booths because Alamo would have charged us for that otherwise (I called and checked).

Pros: i thought i reserved a car at the airport but it was downtown and the store was closed - the airport never gave me a deal - they were out of cars but I am certain they lied. i got a great car from dollar rental - i wont use alamo unless its the last choice

Cons: I was told that I had to either pay $680 extra to return the car in Providence or drive one hour to Boston to extend because I could neither do that over the phone nor go to Alamo in Providence. After I made certain statements I easy transferred to an apologetic supervisor who gave me a better rate and took my card over the phone. But how many people fall for this scam?
Cons: I reserved a full size SUV and they gave me a RAV4 and said it was similar. It was not large enough and they would not correct it so I asked them to cancel it. The rep told me I had to go hunt the manager down myself. When I refused he called him. After a 15 minute wait I was told they cancelled it but didn't want to give me a receipt until I insisted. Another rep then told me to "shut up about it". Never rent from them in Boston! I have used them elsewhere and they were fine

Things were great once I got in the car
Pros: The Kia Sol was nice to find in mid-size. I enjoyed the car and checking out the features.
Cons: All-in-all, I had lots of issues renting, as it was expected that I was a visitor to the state, and no one at any of the rental places made it clear what that meant I needed to bring or do differently until I was already in the location, an hour out of my way. Getting into the rental location was a pain, and took numerous loops around the building to get the right entrance. I ended up paying more than twice the expected amount because I didn't know to bring proof of my own insurance, so the only place that would rent to me charged a premium.

Rent a wreck!
Pros: Customer service and process for picking up the automobile was easy and hassle free.
Cons: The Hyundai Elantra I was given had scrapes, scratches and dents in over a dozen locations. The flat tire warning light was on when I picked up the car and I eventually had to stop and put air in all four tires in order to get the light to go out.

Pros: The car we received was fine
Cons: Check in at Boston Logan Budget desk was really poor. This was a prepaid booking and upon approaching the counter I was told that the class of car I had booked was not available. The class was a 'standard - Chrysler 200c or similar'. I was told that we could be upgraded to a small 4x4 which I thought, okay fine. There was no mention of cost for this upgrade until signing the T&Cs at the end of the booking on the machine that I noticed it was an additional $5 a day. When I asked about this, the lady said she could put me in a 2 door car without any upgrade cost. That would mean I would be receiving a car below the grade I had booked but paying the same. She would not upgrade for free so I had to pay the $5 a day more for this larger car.
I realise the cost is minimal but I would like to think the principle is that if the car you book & prepay for is out of stock, you get upgraded to the next size up free of charge. Not rushing to book with budget again, that's for sure when there's so many options in that one terminal. Disappointing and rude service.

Cons: Arrived at the rental car center at 1100p. There were 40-50 people in the line at Budget, with only 3 staff working the counter. It was taking 7min-10min to process a customer.
... There werected only a couple people at the other agencies, so I went to Enterprise and was on my way in 10min - and the same car cost me $100 less than at Budget.

Cons: waiting over an hour for a car that was supposed to be reserved, the agent couldn't speak english, the car we got did not have the xm radio we paid for. We had to go back to the airport and exchange the car after being on the phone for 2 hours trying to get the radio to work. Wasted half the day on that. We paid for the ez pass for tolls, it didn't work, so we ended paying another $150 in tolls from MA to VA.
Cons: I didn't know to go to the dollar booth afterhours.

I have sent a complaint form to Thrifty, but regardless of their response, this would be my last experience with Thrifty.

Pros: That after much insistence I was given the ca class reserved and being charged.
Cons: At the counter was asked if want a costly insurance or ok just with basic, as if the basic was not an up charge, yet it was. Of greater annoyance was reserving a Ford Focus or equivalent and having to argue in the garage pickup that a Ford Fiesta is the equivalent of a Focus just because Hrifty considers it to be.

Pros: The overall rental operation appears to be run well. The staff is courteous and helpful and the cars are clean.
Cons: Three issues keep me from giving my rental experience a 5/5 overall. The first is my own fault, I agreed to accept a "compact" vehicle. In the Thrify world this means I got a Mazda 2, a very small, loud, and harsh riding automobile. This car would make a good first car for an 18 yo, but is significantly smaller and less equipped than the average car I am accustom to. It was fairly new, (25,000 miles), got great gas mileage and was fairly quick, but I never felt safe driving on I-90. Which brings me to my next two issues; the car didn't have cruise control and it shook badly when driving over 65 MPH. I fault the Thrify airport ticket agent for putting me in a car without cruise control. She new I would be driving on I-90 and talked me into getting the express pay toll apparatus, but never mentioned that my selected auto didn't have cruise control. What new car doesn't have cruise control? Finally, the car had a bad vibration when driving over 65 miles per hour. So bad that the entire steering wheel, seats and occupants shook. Unfortunately for me, it took nearly 20 miles of driving to get far enough away from Boston to get the car up to 65 miles. By that time it was too late in the day to turn around and request a replacement vehicle.

Pros: I liked that they let us pick the car we wanted out of a good selection of cars in the size we chose. Check-in and check-out were easy and quick. Very friendly service.
Cons: I didn't like that we had to pay for a second driver. Most times I've gotten two drivers on the contract without an additional fee. Only a fee with three drivers.
Cons: We waited at Logan for an hour and a half to get a car. The person behind the counter shared that there were only 4 total employees (including the manager) at that location and that it was unlikely that one of them would be able to help customers at the desk. While some wait was expected, an hour and a half is far too long.

Cons: There were 15 people in line and one agent working on a Saturday morning. We waited over an hour to get our car. Pretty much all the other rental car agencies there had multiple people working and therefore lines which actually moved. Our line literally had at least three people who left line to go over to a different agency.

Self Serve Car Rental?
Pros: The few folks working at PayLess were very nice and working very hard, there were just too few of them.
The car ran well.
Cons: Bait and switch on the rental car - got "upgraded" to a vehicle I didn't want. Because of understaffing, it took an hour in line to get the car. When returning the car, there was nobody to check folks out - cars backed up out of the entrance. Customers didn't know what to do as there was literally nobody in the lot to help. We actually needed to ask people working at Avis what we should do and they told us to go in to the rental counter (where there was 1 person working) to check the car back in. Anyone with a tight schedule would have had a challenge making their flights.

Pros: The car ran well. The clerk at the front desk was very kind and extremely helpful on check-in.
Cons: I had to go search for my own car in the lot. The first car I got was filthy and smelled like smoke. The second was decently clean. On return of the car, no one was available. I was late for a flight and had to go to the front desk and wait in line to give them my return mileage, making me even more late.

Easy & Affordable
Pros: Very easy process to pick-up car and the car itself was spotless. Most affordable option there is.
Cons: Due to the cheaper pricing, Payless had the longest line at Boston Logan (by 5-6 people at least). Unfortunately, they usually seemed to only staff one person to handle the long lines.

Cons: I was over charged $100 for the Payless car rental. We had to wait an hour for Payless car rental to open. The agent was rude. The car was dirty and the fuel tank was not full at pickup.

Fees and long wait times
Cons: They had only one agent as a result they had the longest line of all the agencies at the airport. It took much much longer to get out of the car rental place. Also they make up for their lower costs with the extra fees. You really need to be adamant that you don't want gas or insurance, as they automatically opt you in.
I was told I would have the prepaid fuel charge taken off if I showed a receipt for filling up the tank when I got back. However that didn't happen and I had to fight with Customer Service to get my $30 back. Payless did resolve the issue and refunded my money. However the amount of time and stress to do it didn't warrant the savings.
Cons: Pickup was bad. Reaaaally long wait at the desk at Logan airport .
I had trouble finding EZ in the garage.

Hidden Charges with EZ Car
Pros: The car was brand new, only 100 miles on it!
Cons: The EZ desk is very hard to find at Logan - no signage. It is actually called Advantage. After I was there, the informed me that if I didn't have proof of insurance, I wouldn't have been able to take the car. There should have been notice about this. The add-ons were ridiculous - $28/day for an EZ pass? The wait at the desk was crazy.

Cons: Price paid was not what was quoted. Counter agent was flip/sarcastic - didn't like that we booked via Kayak or bought third party insurance. We had to actively point out scratches on car - agent seemed bothered by our insisting they check it. Drop off was not great. Agent checked mileage and gas, said "leave it running and receipt will be emailed." Did not review pricing, which was more than quoted. There was a line of at least 7 running cars - waste of gas - and left me unsure that I wouldn't be charged for low gas. Will never rent from Advantage/EZ Rent - nor will I ever use Kayak again. Happy to share my experience with family and friends

Cons: When I arrived at the booth for my 6am rental no one was there. All other companies had staff present. I waited until 7, still no staff at EZ. I couldn't wait any longer so I had to rent from Avis. Please refund my credit card.

That isn't true in other places (such as the Seattle or S.F. airports). Perhaps it is a problem to find employees - but Avis used to try harder to have efficient service...

Cons: The rental process was smooth and the rental car was great, but Logan Airport is a nightmare to navigate. No reflection on National, though.
