Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in St. Augustine
I hadn't realized that if you choose whatever the least expensive car available is--a 'mystery car,' rental companies now reserve electric vehicles for that option. I was relieved Agent Romy offered me a hybrid instead. Although it seemed very peculiar to start a car that had no sound, I'm not sure I understand how I would have been expected to charge an all-electric vehicle for the time I rented the car. Honestly, an electric vehicle for rent is not a viable option for most people.

Don't penny Pinch on a vehicle when you have a long trip ahead of you. Comfort far outweighs gas milage.

I lived in St. Augustine for nearly 11 years. Learning the alternate routes saves time and anxiety on heavy traffic holiday weekends.
KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in St. Augustine
When booking car hire in St. Augustine, some of the best beaches and parks in Florida will be easier to reach. Public transport is pretty good inside the city itself, but a car will make your trip much more comfortable if you're looking to travel further. Plus, you can pack all the beach gear you need for a great day out. The city is only around 45 minutes from the Fort Mose Historic Park, and about 50 minutes from the Anastasia State Park.
St Augustine's closest airport is the Northeast Florida Regional Airport (UST). Here, you can find the desks for Avis and Hertz in the main building. The airport is just a 10-minute drive from the city centre. You might also arrive at Daytona Beach Airport (DAB) which is just over an hour from St. Augustine, where you'll find a wider variety of car hire companies. They're located in the main building on Level 1, opposite the Baggage Claim area.
When considering the cost of car hire in St. Augustine, don't forget about the tolls. Florida has more toll roads than any other state in the U.S., so if you take any road trips, you will encounter them. Your St. Augustine car hire company can usually equip your vehicle with a toll pass, sometimes for a small additional fee. This way, you won't need to worry about carrying cash, and it will simply be added to the overall cost of your rental. If you want to check the cost of your route, use the SunPass Toll Calculator.
St Augustine is a historic city, with historic, narrow streets. This can make driving, particularly in larger vehicles, tricky. The most difficult part will often be finding a parking spot, especially if you visit during a busy period like the Nights of Lights in November. You may generally prefer to leave your vehicle parked at your accommodation when exploring the downtown area. The main weather difficulty you may encounter when using car hire in St. Augustine is sudden, heavy rain. You may want to pull over and wait for the rain to pass before continuing on your journey.

There are two main car parks that have agreements with the city, Castillo de San Marcos and The Bass Lot. Bear in mind that they charge every day of the week. Agent Romy at location V8Z was exceptionally helpful. He was patient enough to educate me on my first experience with a hybrid vehicle and again when I had to extend my rental. I needed a vehicle while waiting for a new engine in my own car--a very stressful situation. Romy made it much easier for me. Thank you. I work for a car repair shop; I'll be referring anyone who needs a rental to you.

I will never use Budget again for my rental needs... The Reservation I made for a Ford Transit passenger van, was not honored. I received a call from local agent a few hours before scheduled pickup, who stated that they were sold out of the vehicle I had "RESERVED"... What's the point of making a reservation, when most of the car rental companies, OVERBOOK their vehicles, Just like the airlines!!! Very dissatisfied customer!!!
I arrived at Avis at 12:45pm and the counter was closed and no one was there. The sign said they should have been open until 1pm. I was unable to pick up my reservation. I instead had to book a same-day rental at a location 45 minutes north.

Some St. Augustine car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in St. Augustine.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your St. Augustine car hire.
