Vilnius is Lithuania’s beautiful capital which has a broad range to offer, from historical buildings to big green areas like the Botanic Garden. Rent a car for your time in the city to explore every nook and cranny and to become the creator of your own, customized travel itinerary. With your own car, there are no limits and travelers can also explore the historical city of Kaunas, which is not even 2 hours away by car, or reach Neris Regional Park in less than an hour.
Vilnius International Airport is about 4 miles south of the city. The airport has several car hire agencies on its grounds, which is very convenient for travelers who want to start their journey right there and then. International companies like Hertz, Sixt, and Avis are located onsite, among many others, and travelers should follow the signs to the car hire desks upon arrival.
Driving safety has improved in Lithuania over the past years, but it is still has one of the highest fatality rates on their streets within Europe. This is partly due to the poor road conditions in many parts of the city, but also in suburban areas and rural roads. By driving defensively and slowly, however, drivers should face no problems and local drivers, if driving a little fast sometimes, have a reputation to be friendly and helpful.
Vilnius is a small city with an Old Town featuring narrow roads that can be challenging to navigate through – especially during peak times in the morning and evening. Try to avoid driving through Vilnius during rush hour (7-9 am and 5-8 pm), as traffic can get rather severe, especially on the E272, one of the main roads to the city.

They don't have offices – or at least the pick up/drop off locations that they advertise are not offices. As a result, I ended up waiting for half an hour at train station for the car to arrive, and then had to make special arrangements for the car to be picked up. They also do not accept AMEX and do not accept debit cards without getting full coverage. The whole pick up/drop off process was very unpleasant as a result. The car itself was in a good condition.
Booked luxury suv six month before. Contacted the company to confirm month before our trip. Arrived and the car was not available. They offered me compact suv instead with no explanation, just we don’t have what you booked, not even sorry. Use big companies to rent in Lithuania.
Some Vilnius car providers already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection Waiver into the hire price but not all of them. We recommend being aware of your coverage when hiring a car in Vilnius.
Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Vilnius car hire.
