Located on the banks of the Hudson River in upstate New York, Albany is the state's capital and at 400 years old, is also one of the oldest settlements in the country. Boasting an impressive array of historic and modern architecture, a lively art and theatre scene, and dozens of lush green parks interspersed amongst its diverse neighbourhoods and cosmopolitan downtown area, Albany holidays are perfect for travellers seeking a culturally rich destination.
Albany is a true four-season city; cold and snowy winters (-5), pleasant springs (15), hot summers (25) and colourful autumns (15). Though the city remains popular throughout the year, the warm weather between April and October make spring and summer the best time to visit when visitors can walk around the city in comfort, whilst autumn is the best time to pick some fresh apples. Albany does have its own airport, the Albany International Airport, but infrequent service means most travellers fly into New York or Boston and make the 2.5 hour journey by car. Alternatively, the New York City to Albany train route is scenic and worth consideration. Whilst in the city visitors can walk or drive around, depending on their preference. Albany is in the Eastern Time Zone (GMT-5).
With stunning architecture, plenty of parks, museums and events, Albany holidays are about getting into the city and seeing what's on offer. One of the best buildings to explore is the New York State Capitol building; built in 1899, it is a breathtaking example of 19th century architecture and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Those looking for some great shopping should look no further than Crossgates Mall, a huge shopping centre home to over 250 stores and restaurants. To enjoy the scenery, head to Washington Park, it's the nicest in the area and is alive with tulips in May.
