How to get to Peru

Getting to Peru by air

Peru may be on the other side of the world, but getting there is easier than ever. From London you can fly to Peru’s capital Lima with only one stop. British Airways, Avianca, LATAM Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, Air Europe and Iberia can all fly you to Lima with a single stop.

You can also fly to Cusco, the closest airport to Machupicchu, with only one stop using Avianca. Flying into Puerto Maldonado, Arequipa and Loreto require two or more stops from London, flying with LATAM Airlines, Iberia, Sky Airline and Star Peru.

How long is the flight to Peru?

One-stop flights to Lima from London are the fastest.

A short layover time will get you to Lima in just under 15 hours. Flights to Cusco with one stop, or two stops with short layovers, take about 18 hours.

For flights to the more remote Peruvian destinations like Loreto, Arequipa and Puerto Maldonado, flight times vary greatly. They can range from about 21-29 hours, depending on the distance between connecting routes and layover times.

Lima – the country’s bustling capital

While Lima will most likely be your entry point into the country, make sure to stay a while and discover the city’s captivating combination of history, gastronomy and adventure. Arequipa – the ‘White City’

Why is it called this? More than 500 colonial buildings and arches are made from the white volcanice rock sillar, giving the city its nickname. In fact, the city is surrounded by volcanoes, with El Misti serving as its beautiful backdrop. Wander through its UNESCO historical city centre and sample its unforgettably delicious local dishes.

Amazon Rainforest – from the north or south

The largest green lung on earth has many entry points, with Iquitos in Peru’s northern Loreto region and Puerto Maldonado in the southern Madre de Dios region two of the most accessible. Puerto Maldonado is the Biodiversity Capital of Peru. From here, you’ve got access to breathtaking nature areas like Manu National Park – home to 221 species of mammals and a variety of ecosystems. The northern part of the rainforest in Loreto features the famed Amazon River and Basin and more than 200 species of trees.
