Here at KAYAK we’ve commissioned a study that shows British holidaymakers are having a stressful time when it comes to planning, booking and preparing for a holiday, with over a quarter (27 per cent) admitting the process presents them with a series of concerns.

It appears the problems start right from the first hurdle of deciding where to go with friends and family and then continues throughout the planning stage, including finding somewhere within budget (36 per cent) and choosing the best dates to travel (25 per cent).

Forgetting essential items is another top worry (13 per cent), especially when it comes to underwear (15 per cent), before concerns start to creep up around what may happen whilst away, such as getting ill (26 per cent) and having to deal with badly behaved children (six per cent).

But fret not travellers, we’ve got some handy hints and tips to help take the pain out of planning and booking a holiday.

1. Plan ahead. Data analysis carried out by KAYAK reveals that booking your flight three months before departure means you could save around 20% rather than leaving it to the last minute. Travel search sites, such as KAYAK, can help you find offers that are within budget, but also meet your holiday requirements. [1]

2. Be flexible. The more flexible you can be with travel dates the more likely it is you can get a great deal. KAYAK’s flexible date option lets you search between three days and a month around your ideal travel date, making it easy to find the cheapest options.

3. Do your research. Research the area you are travelling to beforehand in order to find the best places to visit. Planning services, such as My Trips from KAYAK, are an efficient and easy way to plan, store and share your itinerary.

4. Make a check list. Create a ‘don’t forget’ essential item check list highlighting everything you need to have the perfect holiday.

5. Buy travel insurance. Making sure you’re covered for any unexpected incidents while away will relieve the worries before and during your holiday. Don’t forget, if you travel more than twice a year, an annual policy can often be cheaper and give you peace of mind for the whole year.
