We’ve all been there. You find an affordable flight and start to book it before realising the price is actually double due to the extra fee charged to check a bag, or, in the case of low-cost carriers, even bring hand luggage on board. Unfortunately, baggage fees have become an increasingly consistent part of flying.

However, there’s a loophole for fliers who prioritise savings. All airlines still allow you one free personal item. While size limits may vary by airline, a standard backpack is currently fair game for even the most budget of airlines.

But how can you possibly fit everything you need in one small backpack or overnight bag? If you already know the answer, then you’re ahead of the game, so why not start planning your next trip? But if you’re clutching a knee-high boot in one hand and hair straightener in the other, examining your overpacked suitcase as if it was a game of Tetris, this article is for you.

So, read on for our tips and tricks, and, when you’re ready, start planning your next holiday with KAYAK. Use our baggage fee filter to view flight prices with baggage fees included — or excluded, since you’ll soon be ready to travel bag free.

Get yourself a good backpack

Don’t compromise on quality when it comes to choosing a backpack.

Half the battle is bag choice. Splurge on a backpack that can withstand being packed to capacity. It should also feature different internal compartments and zipped pockets, which will provide much appreciated easy access to things you’ll need quickly like your wallet or phone charger, without having to sift through the entire bag.

If you question whether you’ll use it, lose it

If it takes you 10 seconds to decide whether or not you really need something, don’t bring it. Whether it be a book, a hair straightener, or a bulky camera, ask yourself if you can go without it and then let it go.

Choose quality over quantity

Less is more when it comes to packing light.

Invest in some travel-light staples. Think a wrinkle-free shirt, a dress that can be worn multiple ways (like the multitasking Chrysalis Cardi), quick-dry fabrics and quality wool socks that can stand multiple wears. Similarly, only bring clothes that you can see yourself wearing more than once.

Evaluate your toiletries

Consider what toiletries are provided by the hotel (call or email to find out what’s offered) and don’t double up. Also, take inventory of what you can do without for the length of your trip. If you’re only travelling for a week or less, there may be certain products you won’t miss too much. And, unless you’re travelling far off the beaten path, you’ll be able to shop for necessities in your destination (just remember the 100ml rule if you plan on bringing any of it home with you).

Sharing is caring

Don’t double up on items you can easily share.

Travelling with someone else? Don’t pack twice the amount of toiletries. Things like toothpaste and shaving cream can be shared, and splitting the packing list means more room for other things.

Don’t pack duplicates

Variety may be the spice of life, but it’s also the vice of light packers. When it comes to accessories, only bring one of each. Whether it be a hat, scarf, belt or sunglasses, one is really all you need for most trips.

Shop in your destination

Is there a better excuse to buy souvenirs?

If you’re not on an incredibly tight budget, why not use some of that baggage fee savings on some new items? Everything means a bit more when there’s a story behind it, so you won’t regret a new outfit or two, which can also serve as a souvenir of your trip. (Just make sure you don’t buy items that won’t fit in your bag or be allowed on your return flight.)

Pack strategically

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save precious space. Small compression bags can also be used to create a bit more room when needed.

Layer up

Wear your heaviest items to save space.

It may be cliche, but it may be the most valuable tip we can offer. If it’s bulky or space-consuming, wear it. Think your bulkiest boots, winter coat, cable-knit sweater, scarf, hat, or sunglasses. Once you’re on the plane, you can take it all off. (Keep a lightweight, foldable bag handy and when you’re on board you can store any extra layers.)

Now that you know how to pack, find your next flight on KAYAK and don’t let baggage fees get you down.
