Roda is a perfect example of how a community can turn to tourism without losing its heritage or charm. A quiet, picture postcard village on Corfu's north coast, Roda decided to embrace tourism when it became clear fishing and farming just weren't bringing in enough Drachmas anymore. In contrast to many other resorts however, Roda didn't go for broke; it just eased itself into the tourist market, citing its lush fields, sweet smelling olive groves and seven kilometre stretch of gently shelving beach as attractions.
Corfu's climate is pretty similar to other islands in the Ionian Sea, hot and sunny in spring, summer and autumn and mild during the winter. Unlike some of the other islands though, Corfu is bypassed by the humidity reducing Meltemi winds so temperatures in the high summer months really can become stiflingly hot. Getting to Corfu is a cinch as flights are available from regional airports all across the UK (flight times average around the three hour mark). Airport transfers to and from the resort take around two hours. Like the rest of Greece, the time in Corfu is two hours ahead of the UK (GMT+2).
No family will find themselves short of things to do on Roda holidays. Whilst the beach is more than capable of keeping visitors of all ages entertained with its mix of shallow waters and plentiful land and water based activities, it is certainly not the only draw. For instance, the pedestrianised road between the beach and the village has a wide selection of shops, restaurants and bars to sample while the unspoilt countryside which surrounds Roda is perfect territory for exploring, picnicing, hiking and horse riding.
