Situated in a fishing village halfway between Alicante and Valencia, Villajoyosa holidays provide modern beach resorts on the east coast of Spain. With three kilometres of wide, golden, sandy beaches that form part of the local coastline, Villajoyosa holidays include opportunities to try windsurfing, water sports or just simply relax in the sunshine.
Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is approximately 35 km away from Villajoyosa and the timezone for this region is GMT +1. Boasting 300 days of sunshine and a comfortable climate year round, the average temperature is 18–20°C. The ideal period for Villajoyosa holidays is between April and November, and it's worth noting that the busiest times are around Easter week, Christmas or in summertime.
Villajoyosa's old town is set along the riverbed and is filled with rows of brightly painted cottages in ochre, yellow and blue. Valor is the largest producer of chocolate in Spain and has been part of Villajoyosa's culture for 300 years. The Valor Chocolate Museum is devoted to the subject with exhibits of past and present. Isla Tabarca is the only inhabited island in the area and can be visited by boat excursion from the neighbouring city of Benidorm. Meander or take a swim along its pebbly coast and visit its church in the old town.
Castillo de Santa Barbara is a well-restored castle containing various artefacts; its first fortress was built by the 9th Century Moors and the complex stands 550 ft above the Alicante harbour. Caves are common in the nearby mountains and Cuevas of Canelobre which gets its name from the limestone protrusion in the form of a candelabrum. Concerts are held inside the caves during the summer season amongst the stalactites and stalagmites. The town of Elche holds the largest palm forest in Europe with over 700 palms that were first introduced to the region by Phoenicians in the 7th century BC.
