Nestled in the north-eastern corner of Spain lies the province of Catalonia, with the Pyrenees mountain range bordering France and its rugged coastline looking out to the Mediterranean sea. Whether you are into hiking, skiing or sampling great local food and wine, Catalonia has something for everyone.
The climate of Catalonia varies from region to region. You can expect snow capped summits during the winter along the Pyrenees and hot, dry summers in the Mediterranean area. Either of these seasons would be ideal times to make your Catalonia holidays, as spring and autumn can be typically rainy. The famous capital city of Barcelona hosts a new airport terminal which welcomes millions of visitors each year. It is a short 30 min bus ride to the city centre. The town of Girona also has its own airport and is a must-see for lovers for ancient architecture. The time zone in Spain is GMT+2.
There are many great places to visit on your Catalonia holidays, a highlight being the bustling cosmopolitan city of Barcelona. Don't miss the Sagrada Familia, the Pedrera and Park Güell which feature the architecture of Gaudi for which the city is famous. Shopping enthusiasts should head to Portal de l'Angel, a large pedestrian walkway featuring many retail and speciality shops.
Towards the north of Catalonia is the town of Figueres, the famous home of Salvador Dalí which features a wonderful museum dedicated to the artist. The Costa Brava is lined with miles of rocky cliffs and a combination of sandy and pebbled beaches. Some popular coastal towns include Lloret de Mar, Mataro and Tarragona. Montserrat is an unusually beautiful mountain range that cradles the spectactular Benedictine Abbey monastery at its peak. It is a popular spot amongst locals for hiking, camping and bird watching all year round.
