One month, 6 locations, cities, sun, glaciers, and beaches all for under £900; is that even possible? It was just over 140 years ago that Phileas Fogg left London by train in his attempt to travel around the world in just 80 days.

Well, that was the plot of one of Jules Verne’s most beloved books, and it was the height of adventure and imagination for the time. These days most of us would give our right arm to have a full 80 days off to travel the world at our leisure, but it’s so damn expensive. Or is it? Let’s make a new challenge for the modern age, let’s see if we can go.

Around the world for Under £900!

With technology being what it is these days you could fly around the world, stopping only three times, in about 45 hours, give or take. But where’s the fun in that? In fact, the number of legs and the resulting destinations should be a real determiner. Six is going to be our magic number. Like Phileas Fogg, London will be our departure – and eventual return – city. The time of year we will be looking at is the end of March and early April, the route we’ll be following is just one example of how you could choose to circumnavigate the globe. Let us show you one example of how one could fly around the world, stopping at six amazing destinations, and yes, for under £900.

London to Reykjavik: 14-20 March 2017 – £45

The first stop is Reykjavik, Iceland where a direct flight from London is only £45. As you well know, Reykjavik has come from behind to become one of the hottest holiday destinations. The ancient and wild landscape combined with the warmth and hospitality of the Icelanders themselves is going to give you a real sense of adventure, perfect for your first port of call. The good news is that to take advantage of flight deals and stay within budget; you have six full days here. Explore geysers and glaciers, drink cocktails at the blue lagoon – a massive thermal pool – and make the most of the nightlife. For a country with only about 330,000 people in total, the cafes that become bars that become dance floors as the night goes on, are top notch and rival if not beat even the biggest International cities for the party.

Reykjavik to Los Angeles: 20-28 March 2017 – £183

LA, West Coast, USA. Home to the glitz, the glamour, the Sunset Strip, G-Funk, body builders and rollerbladers on Venice Beach, Hollywood, theme parks, Santa Monica Pier, galleries galore, world-class museums, and hella-good Mexican food. You only have seven days and that list doesn’t even scratch the surface of what LA has to offer.

If constant stimulation and flashing neon aren’t your thing, just hire a car and head out into Californa proper. You can check out other cities like San Jose or San Franciso or bypass the concrete jungles entirely and just hit the road. Big Sur, Death Valley, Yosemite National Park, Mono Lakes and Napa Valley; a week never felt so short.

With so much going on it’s hard to work out where the best place to lay your head is. Check out Heat Maps which will help you find the perfect hotel by showing you the best areas according to your personal filters.

Shopping? Nightlife? Sightseeing? Food (seriously, the Mexican food is to die for)?

Los Angeles to Phuket: 28 March – 5 April – £321

From the Sunset Strip to sunrises, sunsets, more sunrises and just sun, sun, sun! Look, this trip may be many things but don’t forget that is also your holiday. Phuket is also many things; the old town, the nightlife, the temples, the Big Budda, but it also stunningly beautiful and the beaches and waters are some of the most coveted in the world. Anyone who has seen them in a picture, film or documentary desperately wants to go there; especially islands like the Phi Phi Islands. If you don’t know them, sort it out – instant bucket list destination. And, as if you needed more temptation, at this time of year the average temperature is 28°.

Phuket to Colombo: 05-16 April – £78

Have you ever had that feeling where you hear a song that gets you right in the feels, or maybe you eat at some mind-blowing yet half empty restaurant, and are torn between wanting to tell everyone in the world about your amazing discovery and selfishly, Gollum-like keeping it all to yourself? Welcome to Sri Lanka.

Okay, it’s not like no one knows this paradise exists, but compared to most idyllic islands Sri Lanka doesn’t register on most people’s holiday radars, meaning you can experience the island’s diverse beauty without a crush of tourists at every turn. The rainforests, highlands, plains and beaches -seriously some of the most beautiful in the world- that make up the Sri Lanka’s terrain are populated with ancient Buddhist ruins, elephants, palm trees, gorgeous towns, and natural wonders. With nine days to really get to know this island, you can decide who you let in on the secret.

Colombo to Amsterdam: 16-20 April – £219

It may seem like the fact that the trip is drawing to an end is sad a total downer, which is why a four-day stopover in Amsterdam is the perfect way to round off your trip.

As one of the most perennially popular Europeans destinations for Brits Amsterdam is just the tonic you need to bring you back down to earth and let what you’ve just done sink in. Stroll the canals, spend hours in the cafes, eat chips with mayonnaise, hit the bars and do everything you’re supposed to do in Amsterdam.

If you find yourself wanting to keep exploring to the very last minute to can check out our Activities page and get recommendations for everything that is happening on the days you are here.

Amsterdam to London: 20 April – £31

And finally – home. Let the last month wash over you, Iceland, Los Angeles, Phuket, Colombo, Amsterdam and now, here, in your favourite cafe or pub, sitting on your couch at a mate’s house, somewhere that says – it’s good to be home. And, check it out, that’s an around the world trip for a grand total of £877 – that leaves you £23 to spend on postcards to send to everyone back home, making them all sick with jealousy.
