From its white sand and stunning seas to lush rainforests, Thailand’s second-largest island offers a true tropical paradise. With so many amazing beaches, the challenge lies in deciding exactly where to stay in Koh Samui. I’ve handpicked the best hotels in Koh Samui for every type of traveller.
Wondering where to stay in Koh Samui? Chaweng Beach is a lively spot for nightlife, while Lamai Beach is slightly quieter with family-friendly resorts. Mae Nam Beach offers a relaxed, authentic experience, while Lipa Noi Beach is perfect for couples seeking seclusion. Bo Phut & Fisherman’s Village have their own unique charm and provide easy access to local food and culture.
Koh Samui (sometimes spelled Ko Samui, with ‘koh’/‘ko’ meaning island in Thai) is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and luxurious resorts, while also offering a range of activities and a good tourist infrastructure that caters to families and honeymooning couples.
A look at the map will show you that most of the action, whether it be Koh Samui hotels, shopping, or nightlife, is concentrated in the northeast part of the island in Bo Phut. This is also where you will find Samui Airport.
North of the airport sits Wat Phra Yai, also known as the Big Buddha, which is one of Koh Samui’s most famous sights. Further west is Bo Phut Beach and the Fisherman’s Village with its fun night market.
Chaweng Beach on the east coast is considered Koh Samui’s main beach, but travellers also love Lamai and Mae Nam. If you wanted more seclusion, Lipa Noi on the west coast is the place for you.
In the centre of Koh Samui, accommodation is few and far between, but there are plenty of waterfalls and viewpoints to explore, as well as a few elephant sanctuaries.
Tips for your Koh Samui stay & how to get around.
I have been to Koh Samui a few times, and one downside is its lack of public transport. While I usually don’t mind walking, most areas are not very pedestrian-friendly.
Taxis: these are quite expensive. You can sometimes use the taxi app Grab, Asia’s version of Uber, but prices are still so much higher than, for example, in Bangkok.
Airport transfer: if you are coming from or going to the airport, you should ask your resort for an airport transfer. This generally won’t cost you much more than a taxi and saves you the hassle of negotiation. Alternatively, you can make use of the minivan transfers at the airport, where you share a ride with other passengers. These have a fixed rate depending on the area in Koh Samui where you are staying. However, they will gather a minimum of passengers before departure, so you may have to wait a bit.
Car hire: for getting around Koh Samui, you can either book an organised tour with a driver or hire a motorbike or car. I personally think Koh Samui is big enough to warrant a car, especially if you are travelling with your family or a group of friends.
To hire and drive a car or motorbike in Thailand, you will need your valid UK driving licence, an International Driving Permit (IDP), and your passport It definitely helps that Thailand drives on the left-hand side of the road!
Songthaews: the only other option is shared taxis, the so-called ‘songthaews,’ where you sit in the back of a covered pickup on a bench. However, there is no proper timetable, and the routes can be a bit hard to understand for foreigners.
Transfer to the pier: many travellers will use Koh Samui as a jump-off point to catch a boat to Koh Pha Ngan or Koh Tao. There are a few different piers on the island that companies like Lomprayah and Seatran use. These ferry companies usually offer an inexpensive transfer from the airport or your hotel to the pier and vice versa. If you can, make use of this transfer, as it is the cheapest option.
And learn from my experience: I had chosen an arrival time at Samui Airport that was cutting it too close, and then saw the van depart in front of my eyes. While I did make it to my boat just in time, I had to fork out for an expensive private taxi to get to the pier. The moral of the story – check the transfer times with your ferry company carefully (you can use the LINE App or Facebook Messenger).
