Seoul's Gimpo International Airport dates back to the 1930s. In the latter half of this decade, Japanese armies built an airstrip for military use. In 1945, Korea won independence from Japan and allowed America to use the landing strip until the 1950s when the government took over. Two decades would pass before upgrades turned the landing strip into a larger international airport that could serve most of Korea. In 1988, with the advent of the Olympics and an heavy increase in tourist traffic, the country realized that a larger airport was necessary. Plans to divide and improve the present airport were established.

Today's remodeled airport handles thirteen million passengers every year and contains only a domestic terminal. While there used to be both domestic and international terminals, all of the international traffic is now handled at the nearby Incheon International Airport. The domestic terminal is four floors and offers an excellent range of amenities, services, shops, and restaurants. Smoking areas are found on each floor in both terminals. The airport design is rather straightforward. The airport roadways form a triangle. Each the domestic terminal sits on the middle of one side, Incheon International Airport is on the other side of the triangle, and the major thoroughfare is found at the bottom of the triangle. Parking areas are located in the center of this triangle.
