The travel landscape has changed drastically over the past year. How, when, and what travellers search for has changed. To better understand these shifting preferences, KAYAK, the world’s leading travel search engine, analysed its millions of search queries to determine how travel search behavior has evolved across Europe.
In what has been one of the most unpredictable years of travel, who’s been the most likely to book a spontaneous trip, upgrade to first-class, or opt for a road trip? KAYAK’s first-ever European Travel Habits 2021 Map highlights the search behavior from around the continent, revealing the unique travel preferences and habits in each country.

- Most Spontaneous: Poland had the most last-minute flight searches (28%)
- Biggest Planners: Germany had the least last-minute flight searches (20%)
- Most Solo travellers: Spain had the highest share of solo flight searches (76%)
- Most Group travellers: Netherlands had the lowest share of solo flight searches (65%)
- Big spenders: The United Kingdom had the highest share of first-class or business-class flights (6%)
- Most frugal: France had the lowest share of first-class or business-class flights (1%)
- Staycationers: Italy had the highest share of domestic hotel searches (81%)
- Anywhere-but-here travellers: Netherlands had the lowest share of domestic hotel searches (21%)
- Shortest trippers: Poland had the shortest average trip duration from flight searches (6.7 days)
- Longest trippers: The United Kingdom had the longest average trip duration from flight searches (9.5 days)
- Roadtrip Lovers: Spain had the highest share of car hire searches (23%)
- International jetsetters: France had the highest share of international flight searches (67%)
- At-work searchers: France had the most flight searches during business hours (46%)
- At-home searchers: Sweden had the least flight searches during business hours (42%)
- Early birds: Sweden had the most searches for flights before 8am (4%)
- Sleepy heads: Spain had the least searches for flights before 8am (2%)
