The background of the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel was built as a papal chapel in 1473 by the architect Giovanni dei Dolci. In addition to being the pope’s own chapel, it’s also home to some of the most famous frescoes in the world, painted by Florentine Renaissance masters. The most important artworks are considered to be Michelangelo’s frescoes on the ceiling and the west wall behind the altar.4

Who is the attraction suitable for?

Anyone who appreciates art and architecture (on any level) should go when in Rome. The chapel is also an important religious site in the Catholic Church; this is where the conclave meets to elect a new pope.

Do I need to book in advance?

The crowds can be overwhelming for some people. Aside from arriving early, head directly to Michelangelo’s frescoes once you get in and then work your way backwards, to avoid the rush.
