Pros: Great location, meals and service.
Cons: Toilet smelled a little. Not sure if it was old or cleaning was needed.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Traditional and quiet. I was treated very well by the staff during my stay. A well run ryokan. Highly recommended. My kudos to staff named quyhn (or something like this spelling).
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staffs were very nice and kind. Room was large with a private toilet. The dinner and breakfast were superb!!! Onsen outdoor was nice. The futon was very comfortable.
Cons: If you drive there, make sure you follow gps navigator carefully.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast: salad, simmered tofu, rice, fish, egg flip omellete, fresh juice and coffee -- and a bwautiful serving room.
Cons: It is a hefty price. But, in Japan, all ryokans at hot springs are.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Centrally located at Kurokawa and very good value for money
Cons: There is smell in the toilet of my room

Pros: It was a relaxing n cosy stay in Yumerindo Ryokan. We had fine dining dinner n breakfast which was yummylicious n worth the money. The location is easy to access n just a five 5 minutes stroll leisurely to the surrounding of Kurokawa Onsen Town. The scenery is awesome n peaceful. We had lots of fun n bought many souvenirs n food. The cream puffs n sweets in Raku Raku was great. The indoor n outdoor onsen in Yumerindo was perfect for the cold weather. It was indeed a totally relaxation for us. Yumerindo Ryokan is indeed a very warm n cosy place to stay
Okyakuya - Minamioguni - Outdoor view

9.4 Excellent (910 reviews)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff is very friendly and helpful.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: It's been a long time since I had such a pleasurable experience in a hotel. This ryokan was gorgeous and the personnel very nice and welcoming. The food was awesome and elegant.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: All staff members were very kind and room condition was very clean and neat.
Cons: The food was alright but couldn’t feel it is so delicious.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is such a special place. We were welcomed by a wonderful lady who could speak English (trust me, it is nearly impossible to find this in Japan!) and she took the time to explain us everything. We spent a lovely time at the Onsen and the futons were really comfortable (much more than some beds at hotels!). In the morning we enjoyed a Japanese breakfast (we are not super big fans of Japanese food in general but we enjoyed this particular breakfast - both the food and the amount of it). In the afternoon they let us stay there while we waited for our bus and then they took us to the bus station by a private minivan.
Cons: Nothing, really / thank you for everything.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was unexpectedly wonderful and the staff made small touches to make sure the meal was an experience. Even though Okyakuya is the oldest ryokan in town, it is nearly spotless and I never worried about the cleanliness of the place.
Cons: I would have liked all hot springs to be available at different times. For example, one hot spring was available for one gender during 6:00-9:30 AM only. It would have been nice to have one day at 6:00-9:30 AM and another day at 3:00-11:00 PM.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: - awesome service - transportation from/to bus stop - superb hot springs bathing - love breakfast
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is right in the historic centre of Kurokawa onsen. There has been an inn on this spot since 1722 and is situated on the river bank. The inn was perfectly nice but not too sure that it represented full value for money.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: All service staff did their best to make our stay comfortable; most were able to speak English. Generous portions of food. Best fluffy rice we have ever eaten. Apparently, it’s from their own rice fields. Easy transport. Picked us up from Kurokawa Onsen bus stop, which was assuring, given we had luggages. Gave us clear advice regarding transport reservation/ bus booking. Timely follow up was done by staff to check that we were picked up. Tq!
Cons: nil

Cons: The location is a bit far from main street.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Nice and helpful staff found us at the other car park when we got lost. The facilities are good in the hotel. Many choices for hot spring pools.
Cons: One of the hot spring pool suspended but we didn’t notified before the trip, a bit disappointed.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Ryokan was a little far from the main street (around 10 mins walk) and surrounded by beautiful environment, in the deep of mountain, very close to the nature, quiet but had pleasant stream sounds. Public onsen was big and comfortable. Food was good. Room was big and in traditional Japanese style.
Cons: The temperature of the onsen in my room was a little low.

Cons: A family with kids are not welcome. They charge 2160 yen for a kid even though the family share a room and a meal.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was good, portion is just right for me. There is a hot spring bath inside my room, small and nice. There are also 4 private baths and 1 indoor and 1 outdoor baths. I didn't have time to try them all.

Pros: Never booking again... Super terrible hotel experience... Hotel is far away from downtown, only taxi could arrive, no shuttle bus, my room is in the corner,so cold,I stayed all night with sneezing (I didn't experienced in any other hotels) No waiter in service center all the night so if you would like to find some help,no possible. The hot springs is so so so hot so I am angry cause I live in to relax but no relexful thing. When I need help no people. They asked me to pay the hot springs tax so I said I never used cause it's so terrible! Everything seemed amateurish!Completely worthless!

Pros: The private onsen is superb and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The room is spacious and exceptionally clean.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: delicious dinner and breakfast value for money outdoor onsen is superb great view for taking pictures at small waterfall
Cons: don’t trust GPS!!!! follow the sign you should make hotel’s sign in english for foreigners who don’t understand Japanese
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Almost everything about this ryokan is great: the location, staff, food and private rotenburo with an unobstructed view of a beautiful mountain creek. We booked and expected a ‘room’ for four but our accomodation was actually a specious cottage. The pathway along the creek provided stunning autumnal views at every turn. Breakfasts and dinners were delicious. Yes, the property outside Kurakawa is not easy to find but the benefits are total privacy, no other tourists apart fellow guests, and unspoiled natural surroundings.
Cons: We liked pretty much everything there, the horse meat sushi was only so so but our Kyushu experience would not be complete without it.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Outdoor Onzen with waterfall sound and good private bathroom
Cons: Not clear of entrance sign to the hotel
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything... Private onsen is connected to the room. Room and breakfast dining room is seperated from other guests. I’ve visited many ryokan, but this is the best ryokan. Thank you for all kind staffs. Breakfast is delicious. Everything is great. I want to come and visit this ryokan again.
Cons: Nothing

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Every things are so amazing, too perfect place to take a break.
Cons: Front road is small, driving may need to pay more attention.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing ryokan onsen experience, contender for best ryokan I've ever been to. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic, and the open air onsen was very nice. Great wifi for remote resort town. Very centrally located in Kurokawa near the best shops. They were very helpful handling car parking and provided valet for the car, it was ready and waiting for us at checkout. I was travelling with Japanese speakers which made everything easier, if you only speak English you might find communication more challenging but it will be worth it.
7.0 Good
Pros: Good location
Cons: Most of the dishes for the breakfast are too cold even small fillet, seems like just taking out from the fridge. It's a bit disappointed and unacceptable.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful property right in the middle of Kurokawa Onsen. The river right outside the room was very pleasant, providing a nice view and ambient sound. Delicious traditional-style breakfast and dinner. A daily private reservation for the outdoor bath was provided which was fantastic, and we also enjoyed a dip in the mixed cave bath which was very cool. Staff was very helpful and kind, although their english was not perfect they always tried their best to make us happy.
Cons: The property is a bit labyrinthian, so better english guidance would have been helpful.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor onsen, the rotenburo on reservation, the amazing staff, the history of the place... a most-see in Kurokawa onsen
Cons: Honestly nothing
Satonoyu Waraku - Minamioguni - Building

8.7 Excellent (30 reviews)
Overview Reviews
With a stay at Kurokawa Onsen Satonoyu Waraku in Minamioguni (Kurokawa Onsen), you'll be a 5-minute drive from Meotodaki Fall and 9 minutes from Kuju mountain. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Our hosts were gracious and helpful, and ever aware of what they could do to make out stay even more pleasany. The food was AMAZING: overstuffed myself throughout our two-day stay, and everything was presented beautifully as well. Kudos to the chef!! Very nice to have our personal hot spring tub. Interiors of the property were well designed. Our room was huge, and also had a balcony (which unfortunately looked out at a back hoe fixing up the river). The extra heaters in the room came in handy with cold nights (and for drying our shoes which got tremendously muddy after a spring hike in the local mountains).
Cons: The hot springs (both in our room and the public/outdoors one) could have been hotter at times, particularly when the cool winds was blowing outside. Nice to have our own hot spring tub, so even when it was cooler than it should have been, we could just hop out, wait for a few minutes while the cold water cycled off, and then hop back in. It was very very difficult getting to the ryokan for the first time--even the English GPS had problems with the address. That view off our balcony was particularly unfortunate.
4.6 Okay
Cons: Only reason i picked this place is large space(60sq ft) as described. Its not even 30 imo
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Dinner exceptional. Hosts very nice and accommodating. Transfers organised to all the locations we wanted. Room spacious and comfortable.
Cons: Slow Internet connection in the room.
7.9 Good
Pros: The hot spring bath was lovely
Cons: Unfortunately building work was being completed on the other side of our balcony. The lighting in the room wasn't great so the room was quite dimly lit.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: We loved everything about this Ryokan. It is a full-on experience that you will never forget. The service and the food were perfect !
9.6 Excellent
Pros: One of the best onsen hotels I have ever stayed in.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was wonderful, we arrived a little early, so we were not able to check in. The staff showed us a map of all of the other towns Onsen's, and even gave us a toiletry bag to take with us before check in. The ryokan Hozantei was wonderful! The staff was kind, the room was amazing, and the Hot Spring was beautiful. The dinner and breakfast was delicious, with many different traditional Japanese foods to try. If you ever wanted a true Japanese ryokan experience, look no further!
Cons: Nothing, everything was amazing.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful environment, clean, spacious room, great staff
Cons: In the public onsen, can have body lotion and one more strong hair dryer for guests. Can tell guests that there are dining options ahead of time. We only realized we could have ordered shabu shabu when we got there but it was too late! More types of short excursion tours would be great.
7.5 Good
Pros: The riverside private onsen in our room was fantastic. It's a beautiful grounds, the type c room is quite pretty. Staff were nice and gave us a tour that we liked.
Cons: The indoor onsen was dirty. No yukatas provided, they provide a shirt and pants and shoes that are made for tiny people, so anyone over 5'8 will be too big to wear them. It's not a typical ryokan experience in my opinion. The two separate single beds is weird.
7.5 Good
Pros: Friendly and professional staff. Room was big and onsen was excellent . But the bathroom was not heated so it was a bit cold. The dinner wasn’t as good as expected.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The room is so beautifully arranged and furnished. The amenity and toiletries are also convenient. We live close to the resort's bath house. Both the indoor and outdoor onsen are amazing.
Cons: The food is a bit on the average side. Dead insect bodies on the wall.

Yamamizuki - Minamioguni - Restaurant
16
9.1 Excellent (869 reviews)
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Environment, nature around the property
Cons: Big outdoor bath cleanliness could have been better
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, superb meal, graceful decorating style, cozy room. Everything is wonderful. The only one thing we can complain a little is you can see the small bugs easily somewhere
Cons: A little far from the main street (30mins walk) but there's a shuttle bus works every day.
4.2 Okay
Pros: The onsen are very pretty and relaxing, especially after dark. It would have been nice to share an onsen with my wife if we had hired out the private unit, but apparently that was against the rules (even if you'd paid for sole use of the onsen)
Cons: Yamamizuki is very poor at meeting customer needs, if the customer wants anything that even slightly alters their way of doing things. So I was told "No" in response to every request I made, all of which were quite reasonable: Could we have a simple Western breakfast? - "No". I requested this on my booking form but they didn't answer before we arrived. They eventually on Day 3 started serving a piece of fruit and one piece of bread per person (this was a $1000 per night booking....), which was inferior to what was available at the local convenience store. We might be back late, can we dine at 8.30? - "No" The teenage children are slow to get up, can we have breakfast at 9? - "No" Today we will definitely not be back before you stop serving dinner, so can we miss it? (Request made at 8.30 am) - "No" (or rather, we will charge you for dinner for 5 anyway) Can we have standard breakfast tea not green tea? "No" (not a hard request....) By the end my whole family felt uncomfortable about asking for anything and in constant danger of breaking unwritten 'rules'. The desire by staff to do anything to meet guests' wishes is completely lacking: - I have a bad foot and walk with a limp. The nearest town is 2km+ away. I walked down there 3 times during my stay. Not once did any of the reception staff offer to use the Yamamizuki car to give me a lift. Other Asian hotels would be ashamed to let a guest walk off as Yamamizuki did. It may also be of interest to know that a Yamamizuki stay is designed to isolate you from other people. All meals are served in private rooms and there are no public areas whatsoever - reception rooms, gardens etc. For some people, this may be a positive but for anyone wanting to ask other guests about onsen or the surrounding area, you will learn nothing at Yamamizuki.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Truly amazing experience. Incredible hot springs and unforgettable meals.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan was more than I had envisioned. The staff were beyond attentive, friendly, and extremely helpful. The facilities were amazing, including the onsen. We were stuffed every meal here as the food selection was so fresh and delicious!!! We will come back. Thank you again!
Cons: Absolutely nothing!
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The rotenburo was amazing, positioned along side the river. I do not think it gets better than this.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Good onsen with awesom view. Accessing to sister hotels' onsens is a plus. Decent service. Nice dinner and breakfast. The room with private onsen is superb.
Cons: It would be great if skin lotion is provided.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: We got the family room with two private onsens, one of which was outdoor. Absolute splurge but so worth it. The service was insanely impeccable, from the moment our car arrived at the ryokan to the moment we pulled out of parking. We felt very well taken care of. Room (more like a... japanese style villa) was enormous, with multiple hallways leading to bathroom, terrace, and onsen area. Kotatsu was such a blessing in winter, so comfortable warming our toes while listening to the river outside rushing by. The kaiseki here blew our minds. So. much. food. And really good food at that. The onsens were BEAUTIFUL. We didn't spend time in the public/family ones as we had our own, but we had a look. The ones in the room were awesome, it was so serene soaking in the outdoor onsen with a view of the river. Felt so relaxed after our first soak that we fell asleep till dinner. The weighted duvets here are also the fluffiest I've seen. So. Freaking. Fluffy.
Cons: They provide two bottles of water per night, but it's not really sufficient seeing as this place is located far away from the town and you'll most likely be spending all your time in the room. The hot water dispenser was thoughtful, but when I used it the water was a little dirty. We only discovered the vending machine as we were leaving.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Staying at this place was an amazing experience. The facilities are great − both the shared ones and private ones. We stayed there two nights. Perfect place to relax! The room was great − not only for the aforementioned private onsen: we loved the kotatsu! The food was absolutely amazing as well. It’s not a cheap place to stay, but for us it was totally worth it.
Cons: Not a minus in itself, but the whole area is hard to reach by public transport. We could not make it to the daily Kurokawa bus in time, so had to rely on a string of trains, buses and taxi − stressful, but everything worked out though! And the onsen itself is a fair walk to Kurokawa town. We wanted to drop by there for post-office, and it was a solid 20m walk − a nice one, but not with sidewalks all the way − quite stressful with cars coming up :)
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything. Had no problem communicating with staffs, which rarely applies to other ryokans
Cons: None
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My husband and I stayed at this ryokan for a few days. It was our first time traveling to Minamioguni and we did not know what to expect. Oyado Kafugetsu exceeds our expectations in many ways. Our room was a lot bigger and newer than expected. We even had a private indoor and outdoor bath which were free to use at any time. My husband and I are big fan of traditional Japanese home and this ryokan is just perfect! There were a female and a male (separated) baths with breathtaking view to a waterfall, and also a couple of other shared baths near the waterfall. The whole experience is just amazing! Breakfast and dinner were inclusive in the hotel fee. The food there was definitely the best we have had during our entire trip in Japan this year. The staff were all very courteous, professional and friendly. Despite our limited knowledge and proficiency in Japanese language, we were able to communicate and had fun conversations with them. It was definitely the place to be if you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life to uninterrupted tranquility. We felt really spoilt during our entire stay there and will definitely stay at Oyado Kafugetsu again. We highly recommend it to anyone traveling in Minamioguni/Kumamoto.

Pros: Knowing that we are visitors from Hong Kong, the hotel arrange a Taiwanese staff who is proficient in Taiwan language and English to serve us. It is very thoughtful arrangement. The room is spacious with private onsen. You can enjoy the waterfall view in one of the public onsen. The hotel is so nicely decorated with traditional Japanese garden style that it becomes one of our "site seeing spots".
3.8 Mediocre
Cons: It must be good hotel if in a good condition.Very old and not clean at all around area,it look like spooky hotel. The food not like that show in booking.com
