Welcome, fellow explorers and budget-conscious families. As a seasoned family traveller, I understand the challenges of planning cheap family holidays in the UK that will entertain the kids.

Going on holiday and creating memories doesn’t have to break the bank. My family and I have found plenty of free and low-cost activities over the years, from fossil hunting in Devon to lakeside picnics in Cumbria.

In this guide, I’ll share my tips and experiences to help you plan cheap family holidays in the UK without compromising on family fun or adventure.

Top affordable family-friendly destinations in the UK

I know you’re excited to start planning your next family trip, so let’s dive in with my top suggestions for cheap family breaks in the UK.

A tranquil retreat in the Lake District

The surface of the river reflects a rock arch bridge and views of the surrounding mountains.

The Lake District offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of family life. My family enjoy exploring the free nature trails and engaging in charming village activities. I find it’s the perfect way to slow down and enjoy each other’s company.

  • Where to stay: I recommend checking out Begbie Cottage for its cosy atmosphere and great location. Opt for family-friendly cottages like this or local B&Bs.
  • Meal planning and dining: We visit local markets to buy fresh produce to enjoy in our self-catering accommodation; it’s a great way to enjoy good food on a small budget.
  • Free and low-cost activities: There are so many beautiful places to visit in the Lake District for free, from its picturesque lakes, unspoilt beaches and charming villages. Simply pack a picnic and let the adventure begin.

“If you have your own watersports equipment, take it to Lake Windermere for a fun-packed budget-friendly day out with the kids.”

Coastal beach holidays in Cornwall

My family love the magic of Cornwall’s coastline, with its golden beaches and captivating landscapes. Cornwall is perfect for families seeking sun, sand and adventure on their cheap family holidays in the UK. We save money by visiting during the low season between September and February. This also has the bonus of avoiding summer crowds.

  • Where to stay: Choose beachside campsites or family-friendly resorts like Sandymouth Holiday Resort for a comfortable, budget-friendly stay.
  • Meal planning and dining: We look for seafood delights at fisherman’s markets and off-the-beaten-track seaside cafes. The budget-friendly Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar in Newlyn is well worth a visit.
  • Free and low-cost activities: We’ve enjoyed many adventures when visiting the best places in Cornwall, like the historic coastal towns and villages on its magical coast. You should visit Boscastle and Port Isaac, where children of all ages can enjoy ice cream and sea glass collecting.

“When I am looking for accommodation, I always prefer self-catering accommodation to save money, but I never compromise on quality. Visiting the local food markets is a fun thing to do too, and means you can create amazing low-cost meals during our stay.”

Historic adventures in Edinburgh

Edinburgh can capture the imaginations of parents, grandparents and children alike, making it a great choice for a multigenerational holiday. We love how accessible Edinburgh is, as it is easily explored by foot, making it one of our top picks for cheap travel for families.

  • Where to stay: When we stay in Edinburgh, we choose budget-friendly hotels that include breakfast to make sure everyone is set up for the day. Use the ‘free breakfast’ filter on KAYAK to filter for these.
  • Meal planning and dining: Hearty Scottish fare and family-friendly dining go hand in hand, and Edinburgh is brimming with local pubs and bistros that do both very well.
  • Free and low-cost activities: As far as family city breaks go, Edinburgh has something for all ages. Most will enjoy exploring the iconic Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and visiting the free museums and historical landmarks, making this one of the best cheap family holidays in the UK. You can always find fun things to do for free.

Cultural delights in York

Another one of my favourite family city breaks is York. We love its mediaeval charm and historical delights – a unique destination for all families.

  • Where to stay: For comfortable and budget-friendly accommodation, stay at Allerton Park, which provides great access to the city centre.
  • Meal planning and dining: Visit to a family-friendly historic pub – I recommend Fossgate Tap – or a delicious tea room like the famous Bettys Cafe and Tea Rooms. Both are a must during your time in this charming city.
  • Free and low-cost activities: When my children were young they loved strolling the city walls, seeing the street performers in the city centre and visiting the National Railway Museum – a must-visit for transport enthusiasts of all ages.

“The first thing I do when I book a holiday is look for free activities. A good bet is seasonal festivals, as this is something that our whole family can enjoy.”

Nature retreat in Snowdonia National Park

Hikers travel a pebbled route across a green valley with views of rugged mountain peaks in the distance.

My family were blown away by the stunning landscapes and incredible scenery of Snowdonia. Perfect for active families who enjoy nature and adventure. It’s a destination like no other, with mountains, beaches, walking trails, hidden waterfalls and traditional towns and villages.

  • Where to stay: Snowdonia has lots of family-friendly accommodations that immerse you in the heart of the national park. Campsites or budget-friendly lodges are a great option for staying.
  • Meal planning and dining: Pack a picnic for a day of hiking or enjoy locally sourced produce in the abundance of independent pubs and cafes that surround the national park.
  • Free and low-cost activities: If you have older kids take on Mount Snowdon’s summit, but if you don’t feel quite ready for that, try racing through the trees on a rollercoaster or the giant swings at the local adventure centre.

Maritime marvels in Liverpool

Liverpool’s maritime history and vibrant culture created an engaging experience for our family during one of our UK family breaks. Liverpool boasts incredible architecture, easy-to-access attractions and a range of culinary options that will keep the pickiest of eaters happy.

  • Where to stay: There is a range of family-friendly budget accommodation available around the city that would even suit a larger family travelling for cheap in the UK.
  • Meal planning and dining: Liverpool has something for everyone, from traditional takeaways and fish and chip shops to a wide range of international cuisines. My family’s personal favourite is The Interesting Eating Company – perfect for a family brunch.
  • Free and low-cost activities: There are lots of free museums and galleries. Check out the World Museum, Walker Art Gallery and Museum of Liverpool for fun interactive activities for the whole family.

Island adventure on the Isle of Wight

Need more excitement and adventure? We love a family island escape where sandy beaches and kid-friendly attractions beckon. The Isle of Wight is the perfect destination for cheap family holidays in the UK. You feel like you’ve travelled abroad, without the passport or the price tag.

  • Where to stay: Despite being a small island, there are many affordable accommodation options, from campgrounds to family-friendly resorts. We’ve found booking well in advance the best way to save money.
  • Meal planning and local dining: This island is the perfect destination to encourage kids to sample incredible seafood at the coastal cafes.
  • Free and low-cost activities: Enjoying the island’s beautiful beaches is a given, but you should also visit the local donkey sanctuary and the Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum to keep the young (and old) transport enthusiasts happy.

Seaside serenity in Scarborough

If you’ve ever wondered where the cheapest place to go on a UK family holiday is, I’d always recommend Scarborough. My family loves the classic British seaside experience, and this charming town always delivers. Hours are spent on the beach building sandcastles, visiting arcades and savouring the local treats. It’s a budget-friendly UK gem for young families, with a sense of nostalgia that grandparents will appreciate too.

  • Where to stay: Scarborough is brimming with family-run budget-friendly guesthouses, or seaside cottages for a cosy self-catering option.
  • Meal planning and dining: We love Scarborough for beach picnics, traditional fish and chips and a daily dose of ice cream.
  • Free and low-cost activities: Our kids love building sand castles and collecting treasures swept up on the beach – the best part is, it’s completely free!

Embarking on a budget-friendly family adventure in the UK is not only feasible but immensely rewarding. The UK is brimming with affordable destinations, like Scarborough or Liverpool. I hope that you are inspired to plan a city break to Edinburgh or a short break to some of the best seaside towns in the UK during your search for your next cheap family holidays in the UK.
