Laid back living in San Diego

San Diego sits on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in California, just north of the border with Mexico. Its mild climate is ideal for enjoying the picturesque beaches and large range of outdoor activities. Although the city is large, the atmosphere is relatively laid-back, providing visitors an opportunity to relax while savouring the diverse culture and vibrant nightlife.

Beaches and the great outdoors

San Diego has no shortage of things to do. With long stretches of coastline, from Imperial Beach in the south to Mission Beach further north, the first point of call for many tourists is to jump right in to some outdoor activity. Try your hand at sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, boating and scuba diving, or take a surf lesson from a pro. For something a little more chilled out, swim in a secluded cove or join a harbour cruise for some sightseeing and whale watching. The harbour cruises also provide spectacular views of the downtown area, a peek at the Pacific Fleet and a great perspective of the towering Coronado Bridge. On and over land, explore the natural landscape with biking, hiking, rock climbing or hang-gliding.

Balboa Park, with its expansive grounds containing museums, parks, gardens and neo-classical Spanish architecture, is a popular tourist attraction. San Diego Zoo is also located within Balboa Park, adding to the must-see status of the area. Take a stroll through the Old Town neighbourhoods and admire the well-preserved buildings and icons of San Diego’s Spanish heritage and watch a living history performance. Shops and restaurants are scattered around the Old Town, making the area a lovely spot for an evening out. Be sure to try a craft beer from one of the local brewers. If you have time, check out the Point Loma Lighthouse for panoramic sunset views over the city and Pacific Ocean, or duck over the border to Mexico to party in Tijuana.

Booking your stay in San Diego

San Diego has a range of accommodation to suit most budgets. For big spenders, Luxury high-rise hotels can be found downtown, and opulent resorts along the coast at Coronado, Point Loma, La Jolla and Ocean Beach. Mid-range options are available in the numerous vacation rentals and beach cottages at Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. Hotel Circle in Mission Valley is an excellent place to book a stay in a well-known chain hotel. Hostels are easy to find Downtown for an inexpensive visit.

Fly in and make your own way around

San Diego International Airport is less than 5km from the downtown area and services an extensive list of domestic flights, as well as international flights from London, Tokyo, Toronto and several cities within Mexico. Given the closeness to the city, taking a taxi from the airport is a cheap option. There is also an Airport Flyer Bus that delivers commuters directly downtown and a number of door-to-door shuttle companies. If you can navigate your way out of the airport infrastructure, driving to the city centre takes roughly ten minutes. Trains run directly to San Diego from Los Angeles along the Pacific Surfliner route and the train station is within walking distance of downtown hotels. Once in the city, the Metropolitan Transit System buses and the San Diego Trolley (light rail) provide adequate connections across most of the region. The best way to get around and take advantage of the beautiful weather is to rent a bike and explore on your own.
