KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Avalon

  • Hire a car in Avalon to have the ability to cruise along the Great Ocean Road at your own pace. Avalon does not have its own train station, with Lara Railway Station being the closest at more than 7 km from Avalon Airport (AVV); and as such, a hire car is your best option of transport to and from the airport. Destinations on the coast past Geelong are tricky to get to on public transport, with the journey from Avalon to Torquay taking roughly 1h 45min rather than a 40min drive. You Yangs Regional Park can be reached from Avalon in around 25min; however, no bus services connect the parklands meaning a hire car or taxi are your only options.
  • Reception offices for hire car companies are located next to the Tourist Information Desk at Avalon Airport (AVV). Alamo, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Enterprise, Hertz, Redspot and Thrifty have desks inside the terminal and the vehicles are only a short walk from the building. Hiring a car at Avalon Airport can save you time if you’re heading to Melbourne as a bus transfer takes about 1h 10min and only departs once every hour, while the trip by car is 45min.
  • Drive cautiously around winding coastal roads as views of oncoming traffic can be obstructed by cliff faces. Tourists regularly stop along the Great Ocean Road to take pictures so it’s important to decrease your speed and keep a safe distance when passing parked vehicles. Cyclists are common on roads surrounding Avalon, and drivers must check blind spots at intersections and provide a minimum distance of 1 m when overtaking, preferably wider when driving at fast speeds. Wildlife can wander onto the roads in rural sections of Avalon, especially at dusk, and a watchful eye should be maintained to avoid collisions.
  • The Princes Fwy is the only road in Avalon that experiences considerable traffic, with the worst congestion travelling eastbound between 07:30–09:00 and westbound from 16:00–19:00. Delays are generally at their peak approaching the Geelong Ring Rd intersection.
  • Small hire cars in Avalon are around 26% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about car hire in Avalon

  • What’s the speed limit in Avalon?

Unless signposted, assume the speed limit is 50 km/h in Avalon. Major arterial roads, including Beach Rd, are set at 60 km/h and Princes Fwy has a limit of 100 km/h. The stretch of highway near Avalon, connecting to Geelong, is routinely policed with red light cameras and patrol cars so it’s important to watch your speedometer carefully.

  • Where are the best places to park in Avalon?

Deductible

Keep in mind that car hire insurances often have a deductible clause, which is the amount you’ll have to pay if something happens during the time of your hire. If you want to avoid unwanted surprises, you should consider adding a non-deductible option to your Avalon car hire.
