Open heathland stretches to the west and the Elbe meadows to the east, with the old town of Luneburg and the city of Hamburg within easy reach. A quiet countryside surrounds the resort. Luneburg is a thousand-year-old salt town of crooked gabled houses, trendy restaurants and red-brick merchant fronts, grown wealthy long ago on the salt trade. Just beyond it stretches the Luneburg Heath, the largest connected heathland in Central Europe, which turns a sea of purple when the heather blooms in late summer, grazed by hardy Heidschnucke sheep and crossed by walking and cycling trails. Horse-drawn carriages still roll through villages of thatched cottages nearby.
