Hotels near Yamagata Junmachi airport

Pros: Everything. So for 4000yen I get a room to myself (though this is a hostel - unheard of!) with 2 (not 1, 2!) already-made-up (unlike most hostels’) beds, all-you-can eat dinner (including Yamagata specialty: Dashi which the owner prepared just because I asked about it), all-you-can-drink, discounted in-house-sold items, and free amenities (towel, ear plug, toothbrush etc which are charged in most hostels). Simply outstanding. Not even mentioning the warm-heartedness of the owner. My favorite hostels so far gave me value equivalent to my money. For the first time I feel I got more value from a property than I paid for. Luckily there’s a donation box for dinner…😉 Now, where’s the 6-star rating button?

Pros: Highly recommend every travelers coming by Yamagata city to stay this hostel. The owner and staffs were gentle, friendly and respectful to all people! The hostel invited free supper (a sort of chatting, information exchange etc). Handmade local food was offered and tasted awesome. Rooms very clean. Every stuffs for staying were prepared. A cute fireplace was placed in living room. Could chill with view of a Japan traditional garden from living room. Location was perfect, just 10 mins from the town center.

Pros: The cat is very cut and the staff is very nice.

Cons: The kitchen is quite dirty and we watched cat peeing on the stove. All the dishes are on cupboards. I am not sure where all the cat is peeing.

Pros: The property is in. Good location close to the centre of the city, near a train line. The rooms were upstairs and comfortable and clean. Showers and toilets were downstairs, clean with great water pressure. The rooms were named after places in New Zealand as is the property which appealed to me. The property encourages guests to get together with the hosts at dinner time and provides some food to accompany your own dinner. This creates a great atmosphere, and for me, led to a very enjoyable evening. While initially I thought the property was over priced, I was able to do my washing and park for free. With all considered, the property is excellent value for money.

Cons: I would have liked more space to hang my washing, but I managed.

Pros: The best host in the Tohoku region, comfortable and inviting space, nice rooms, and a good location not too far from the station with newer restaurants nearby. Sato-san, the proprietor, often prepares local dishes and shares local sake with guests, too. Can't recommend this place more highly.

Pros: The moment I checked in, it felt like another home away from home. The dinner party with the host and other guests were amazing fun and food was great! (Cat was super cute too)

Pros: It was so nicely appointed, elegant and serene. Seemed like a new renovation of a gorgeous old traditional house. Lovely views from all angles of the center rock garden courtyard. Huge room. Great price. Comfy pillows and comforter. Kind and helpful service. Free shuttle pickup from train. Soooooo relaxing.

Pros: After 5 years living in Japan, visiting many places, Homoamino Kuyufu Tsuruya his the best Ryokan I experienced so far : Perfect balance between traditional Japanese hospitality mixed with 21st century comfort and amenities. Breakfast and Dinner in private room is simply perfect as well as in room Onsen. In Yamagata prefecture, it will be difficult to find a better place to stay. Day trip to Matsushima or Mountain Area is easily accessible by car.

Pros: The Ryokan is very comfortable and not at all stuffy (as can be the case at traditional Japanese inns). The rooms are large with great amenities. The food is high quality and plentiful. The hosts are very kind. The free station puck up is really helpful. The Onsen is pretty and the facilities really good quality.

Cons: There was some confusion over whether our booking included food for our five year old. This was resolved by phone and our son was given great meals and s warm welcome. But if travelling with a child best to check with the hotel directly what's included. Booking.com is vague on this matter.

Pros: The hotel, staffs, and foods were exceptional. Room was big, beds were comfortable; facilities were clean. Love the garden and seating area. Very very pleasant experience.

Pros: Great dinner and breakfast. Nice onsen bath with outside bath too. Location offered lots to see. We also loved the massage chairs and the beautiful courtyard garden.

I stayed here on my business trip. A bed was very comfortable for my sleep. This hotel is located far from Yamagata station. It is about 15-20 minutes on foot but you can find some shops around here. A vending machine on the 5th floor in the hotel has alcohols. Grand hotel is grand, it has high ceiling especially in the reception floor. Breakfast is served at the restaurant on the 1st floor. You need pay for it in advance.

A bit old in the interior but spacious room. Close to city centre.

Stayed two nights but be careful - this hotel is a 15min walk from the station which is not ideal when you have luggage and it’s snowing! Room could do with updating - mattress is incredibly springy and the pillows are uncomfortable. Would not stay for more than a couple of nights

Pros: It was clean, very affordable place to stay for a small family of 3 as we were passing through the area

Cons: Parking was very limited, we were lucky to get the last spot just in front of the hotel check in. Breakfast was average, scrambles eggs were not good (nobody in my family of three would eat them, including my Japanese wife).

Pros: we stayed for 3-nights with only breakfast included. the Ryokan itself has warm and cozy public spaces where one can relax. If I were to rate the staff I would give at least a 9 as they were all super friendly (except an older lady at the gift shop). There was a lot of photos and magazines, photo albums about owner's cat, so if you're a cat lover I think it'd be perfect. Outdoor hot bath was great (much better than indoor bath hall) - temp was just right and a wonderful treat in winter nights.

Cons: two main problems with the Ryokan first, the owner of the Ryokan probably spent too much money on website - which was great by the way - but not have enough to improve the actual conditions of the room as well as the public bath hall. Many rooms have doors that are not just dated but clearly worn out at the top and bottom. Inside our room the bathroom and main room wallpaper was stained and it just didn't feel clean. Lighting of the room was terrible (too dark in some area, and inconsistent tint). Public bath hall also was very very dated and needed a major makeover. many parts of the walls were rusted and the ceiling would drip onto your head when you're in bath.... ugh. We've stayed at at least 12-15 different Japanese Ryokans all over the country so there's quite a bit of experience for comparison. second, the quality and selection of food for breakfast just wasn't good. 1st day breakfast was disappointing as there were too many pickle dishes and the fish (salmon) was way too salty. also the small hotpot was soup which was a duplicate to the miso soup. Taste wasn't bad, but as pickles come they are still too salty. I could see a lot of guests did not finish their breakfast. 2nd day breakfast was an improvement. In the small hotpot there was a overeasy steamed egg and a couple of sausages and the fish was a different kind and less salty. However 3rd day was back to the same as 1st day and it was our last meal at the Ryokan so needlessly to say it was very disappointing. We didn't finish them which was a shame and a waste but what could you do. overall it's just not good value which is a shame because it could have been a great Ryokan.

Pros: Beautiful Japanese hotel--modern building but traditional tatami rooms. Extremely comfortable, and the baths (both indoor onsen, and outside rotemburo on the roof) were very clean and appealing. The included breakfast was wonderful (we had Japanese; they easily accommodated the request for vegetarian, even though they included fish roe!!)

Cons: The city of Tendo is not very appealing, and the hotel is near a rather large road, so the area outside doesn't have very much going for it. It is, however, possible to walk to Yamadera from the hotel: along a fairly quiet (even if it's large) road that goes through orchards and fields. (It's about a 9km walk each way.) The free shuttle to/from the train station is only at certain times of day: we were told that they could not bring us back to the train station in the afternoon... (Not quite clear what the rationale for this was). It's about a 20 minute walk to the station. Not many dining options in the neighborhood, so come prepared.

Cons: Dirty matresses, dusty divider, but sheets were clean and fresh. I sneesed so much, I can forgive a lot, but not dirty matresses, it made me look bad!

Cons: Morning buffet was ¥1200 per person. Is not worth for that. Too expensive and no varieties of foods. When I visited 2 years ago it was nice and delicious but this time it was too bad.

Cons: Despite being a non-smoking room there was a lingering smell. Everything was a bit worn and tired, but to be fair this is reflected in the reasonable price.

Pros: Nice cheap place to stay in Tendo. We were mainly staying in the area in order to go to Yamadera which is only about 15 mins away by car. We were able to check in a bit on the late side and the staff at the front desk were very nice. Despite being a small room, there was just enough space for 2 beds so it worked out perfectly for my friend and I. Lots of parking out front and many conbini and gas options nearby.

Cons: The only thing I would have liked is for there to be more outlets in the room. We managed with the ones there but it was a little difficult having them all on one side of the room.

Pros: I particularly like the friendliness of the staff, the room was well maintained and the facilities provided more interaction for the guest. The soft boiled onsen egg was a good one. There is a recreation area where guest can play chess as it was one of the famous activity in Tendo. Besides that a shopping for omeyage store is just right at the lobby area, one can choose for some souvenirs back home. I was having a tatami room, room was spacious with separate bath and toilet. My room come with the F&B so after I came back from dinner, the room was turn down with subtle light.

Cons: The F&B quality is good, however in term of quantity I think it can still be enhanced as I felt that the portion size is a bit too small. In other onsen ryokan I had stayed before, this is fair below my expectation. In normal circumstances I took 1 1/2 hours or more to finish l, but this one took only 30-40 minutes.

Pros: Staff is very helpful, onsen is wonderful, room snacks are delicious

Pros: Probably one of the best Onsen ryokans we have tried in many years. Great facilities especially the Onsen. The food is excellent and the service is impeccable. The DIY onsen eggs add an interesting activity for the guests. Staff was all great even though not all of them speaks English. Overall beyond 10 points!

Pros: Takinoyu locates in the center of Tendo city and provides excellent shuttle bus between Tendo JR Station and hotel. (I just make phone call to book the bus on the JR train, the bus wait you timely outside the station) It takes 3 miins by car and around 10 mins by walk from JR station to hotel. Around the hotel, there are lots of scenic spots to explore: Tendo National Park, Tendo Shoji Museum, Souvenir shops etc. The breakfast and dinner in Takinoyu are terrific with traditional Japanese style, fresh food, tasty flavor, furthermore the atmosphere of dinning environments are very impressive. The Onsen (hot spring bath) offers both indoor and outdoor facilities which let me deep experience the traditional culture as well as relax the body.
